Publisher's Summary

Nobody's Victim is an unflinching look at a hidden world most people don’t know exists - one of stalking, blackmail, and sexual violence, online and off - and the incredible story of how one lawyer, determined to fight back, turned her own hell into a revolution.

“We are all a moment away from having our life overtaken by somebody hell-bent on our destruction.” That grim reality - gleaned from personal experience and 20 years of trauma work - is a fundamental principle of Carrie Goldberg’s cutting-edge victims’ rights law firm.

Riveting and an essential timely conversation-starter, Nobody's Victim invites listeners to join Carrie on the front lines of the war against sexual violence and privacy violations as she fights for revenge porn and sextortion laws, uncovers major Title IX violations, and sues the hell out of tech companies, schools, and powerful sexual predators. Her battleground is the courtroom; her crusade is to transform clients from victims into warriors.

In gripping detail, Carrie shares the diabolical ways her clients are attacked and how she, through her unique combination of advocacy, badass relentlessness, risk-taking, and client-empowerment, pursues justice for them all. There are stories about a woman whose ex-boyfriend made fake bomb threats in her name and caused a national panic; a 15-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted on school grounds and then suspended when she reported the attack; and a man whose ex-boyfriend used a dating app to send more than 1,200 men to ex's home and work for sex. With breathtaking honesty, Carrie also shares her own shattering story about why she began her work and the uphill battle of building a business.

While her clients are a diverse group - from every gender, sexual orientation, age, class, race, religion, occupation, and background - the offenders are not. They are highly predictable. In this book, Carrie offers a taxonomy of the four types of offenders she encounters most often at her firm: assholes, psychos, pervs, and trolls. “If we recognize the patterns of these perpetrators,” she explains, “we know how to fight back”.

Deeply personal yet achingly universal, Nobody's Victim is a bold and much-needed analysis of victim protection in the era of the Internet. This book is an urgent warning of a coming crisis, a predictor of imminent danger, and a weapon to take back control and protect ourselves - both online and off.

Critic Reviews

“Feminists who grew up alongside the internet - who don’t see a distinction between real life and what happens online - will find Nobody’s Victim instructive; those who identify as survivors will find it essential.” (Elle)

“Goldberg writes with searing fury, but she is also smart, engaging and sometimes funny.... The book’s no-bullshit, take-no-prisoners attitude is a call to arms, with an overarching goal to transform clients from survivors into warriors.” (Ms. Magazine)

“A significant book that will hopefully spark change.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Everyone should read this book

This book is such an eye opener! We all have heard about sexual harrassment, sextorsion, etc. but the author gives a complete picture of all the many ways men (because it is almost always men) harrass, abuse and threaten women, and how the system facilitates these behaviours.
I felt this was not an easy book to read because the author does not shy away from the harshness of true stories. However, most of the stories are about warriors who the author helped fight back.
A truly educational book for victims, warriors, and us (often) bystander men.

Great Listen and very informative

The narrator was wonderful and easy to listen to. It pains me that these are true stories and there are so many victims. Would recommend to others. Very educational.

Should be required reading for anyone who uses the internet. So basically everyone.

Ms. Goldberg narrates her own book fantastically. The subject matter is compelling, jaw-dropping, and absolutely necessary information to have. Whether you are currently dealing with any of her entitled people, or just want to protect yourself or your loved ones from the same, this is worth the time to listen. I finished this book with a new fire and determination to fight and to do all I can to help others facing situations like those in her book.

A must listen

Engaging and informative! A fabulous performance and an even more compelling memoir. A brave warrior who is fighting every day for women. She is “nobody’s victim.”

ALL-NIGHTER!

I purchased this book at midnight and just finished it. I never considered how many people became victims of slut shaming, trolls or otherwise through no fault of their own. I always thought of myself as a free thinker and this book forced me to take a serious second look at some of my opinions. The author did an incredible job bringing all cause and effect of internet usage as far as sex is concerned and I have an entirely new outlook on this as well as new found empathy for the victims. This book is important and should be curriculum for High School students. It would save lives.

Did not finish

I don't know why this book has such good reviews. The profanity was too much of a distraction. I know there are monsters out there. It's impossible to take it seriously when the author has lowered herself to the level of the "abuser". It sounded like it was written by a teenage. You would think a lawyer should have a better vocabulary!
The reader is unbearably shri!l. Don't waste your time on this one.

Very informative read

To me the overall story sometimes got me boggled down as there were a lot of facts and it was not fully impacted as it was a bit overwhelming.
The book was very informative and I appreciated how the author told me clearly her motives as well as told her story. It was great to see from being a victim she overcame this and now is instrumental in advocacy for cyber bullying. I love how she turned bad events in her life to a passion for helping others. As a victim of sexual assault in the military I realized that my voice wasn't heard.
She also pointed out that once a victim that this trauma can make you susceptible to having trauma happen a second time and showed this in her own life with her story. I like how she was restored and overcame.
I am trying to take my own trauma to show empathy and help foster kids that are often experience trauma and are susceptible to crimes the author mentions in the book.

A kick ass advocate!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The stories were disturbing at times but it was refreshing to hear how she fights back on behalf of her clients and interesting to learn how she became an advocate. In my eyes, she is a true superhero.

Fight the Power, and take yours back.

Book club MUST for teenagers and older. Silence protects abusers. We need to talk, then we need to act.
