While Clint Harp is now known as Chip and Joanna Gaines’s go-to table maker on Fixer Upper and a nationally acclaimed artisan, his life has not always been the DIY dream we see on the show. Ten years ago, he played the role of what he thought was a good husband, father, and provider, dutifully working at a sales job that came with a healthy paycheck. Yet he kept coming back to his unfilled dream of building furniture. With the support of his wife, the encouragement of a mentor, and a life full of lessons, he finally took the leap, quit his job and set out on a quest to become a carpenter.

Reese Witherspoon’s grandmother Dorothea always said a combination of beauty and strength made Southern women “whiskey in a teacup”. We may be delicate and ornamental on the outside, she said, but inside, we’re strong and fiery. Reese’s Southern heritage informs her whole life, and she loves sharing the joys of Southern living with practically everyone she meets. She takes the South wherever she goes with bluegrass, big holiday parties, and plenty of Dorothea’s fried chicken.

Publisher's Summary
A New York Times best seller! In a world that feels increasingly disconnected, it’s time to reclaim a life of rich, authentic connection—because we are all made better when we trust one another and work together.
In his most vulnerable book to date, Chip Gaines opens up about his lifelong pursuit of building relationships with people from all walks of life. Chip emphasizes the importance of seeing people for who they are and not for what they can do for you, enabling you to build a strong community and a life of meaning, joy, and connection.
How does it happen? By being intentional about choosing the company you keep. Chip explains the value of seeking out people who are electrified by living according to their purpose, who will stand beside you as you tackle new challenges, and who bet on each other instead of the status quo. The key is being true to yourself, figuring out what you want to do with your life, and finding people who will lift you up along the way.
No Pain, No Gaines will open your eyes to valuable lessons, including how to:
- Find the risks worth taking
- Value what you bring to the table
- Resist the status quo
- Look outside yourself and your circle and foster connections with others
- Get comfortable with being uncomfortably kind
- Live life fully awake, not asleep at the wheel
A good life doesn't always come easy, but that's because the good stuff never does. It requires faith in people. It requires faith in yourself. It requires hope. And it requires a willingness to grow even when it hurts. In No Pain, No Gaines, through hard-won lessons and personal stories all told with his trademark blend of wit and wisdom, Chip Gaines will coach you on how to make your life rich and your relationships run deep.

Oh shucks!
Wanted to love it..like the last books.. which I read from cover to cover NONSTOP!! This book is full of cliches. Great advice in it for children and teenagers and his kids will love reading it.. but after his “air heart” to Nancy Pelosi paragraph I lost interest because I didn’t want to read this book and hear anything about political.. just been too much of that in the news lately. But I kept reading/listening only to be more disappointed.

Authentic and real
Parts of this were exactly what I needed to hear, and best part is I didn't even realize I needed to hear them until I did. I found myself stopping what I was doing to really let what was being said to be absorbed, then was surprised at the impact those words had once I let them settle. I definitely feel like others will come away with similar feelings, and sincerely hope Chip continues to write in the future.

Uplifting and motivational listen
I am very fond of Chip. I started watching Fixer Upper because of my love of interiors but that soon changed to watching it because of Chip and Joanna and their infectious personalities. Chip is hilarious and a goofball so when I saw this book was coming out I couldn't wait to read (listen) about what makes Chip, Chip. He has such a zest for life and after listening to his interpretation of the world I can't help but feel like my outlook on life and how I will now choose to live it has changed. I truly believe this will make me a better person. I've never been uncomfortably kind I don't think, maybe once or twice, but I endeavour to do it a whole lot more. I plan to rethink my network, who's in it and who it might be lacking and the next opportunity I get to change it for the better I'll make sure I grab by the horns.
Listening to Chip narrate his story made it such an easy listen, it felt like a conversation with a friend more than anything. I listened to the whole thing in about 4 days whilst out walking my dogs. And it actually made me walk more because I wanted to keep listening, so there you go Chip it also helped me exercise more, win win!!!
Thank you for taking the time to write this book, I hope it has as big an impact on everyone else who reads/listens. I may be going back to re-listen a couple more times.
Best wishes, Stephanie (Manchester, UK 🇬🇧)

Breath of fresh air
A book full of practical ways to think about your purpose in life. Chip is great to listen to & he articulates well, the idea of being authentic in business, in life for others as well as yourself. The concept of “uncomfortably kind” sticks with me the most and resonates particularly well in this covid climate. If you love Chip & Jo, you’ll love this book & maybe even come out with a few business tips as well.
