Publisher's Summary
Misanthrope. Iconoclast. Apostate. Drunk. Many words have been used to describe Doug Stanhope, but rarely has “hopeful” been one of them. However, heading into 2016, Stanhope peered through the apocalyptic fog and saw a forecast that was more rainbows than acid rain: His first book was set for release, his new stand-up special was in the can, and he was about to film a television pilot with his friend and confidant Johnny Depp. The sharks of Hollywood were circling, and Stanhope’s pockets were filled with chum. The only thing that could stop Doug was himself, and that’s exactly what he did.
First came the booze, then came the pills, then came the stripper, and then, Doug came. A tryst aboard a cruise ship leaves him literally and figuratively adrift when his scorned wife, Bingo, reveals she is in love with another man: a jug-sippin’, guitar-pickin’ hobo. A simple, black-out fling turns out to be a pebble tossed into the lake of you-know-what named 2016, and in No Encore for the Donkey, Stanhope traces the resulting rings.
Written and performed by Stanhope, his third memoir follows the veteran comedian on a quest to save his marriage, his wife, and eventually his wife’s life. Our hero's journey finds Stanhope cuddling with Johnny Depp in his Los Angeles mansion, receiving some much-needed TLC from Marilyn Manson, and - most daunting - building a new hour of comedy in the rusted-out hellscapes of post-industrial America.
Equal parts love letter, road romp, and harrowing condemnation of the failures of America’s mental health care system, No Encore for the Donkey is a hilarious and heartbreaking account of a man balancing on the edge of damnation. With Bingo in a coma and Trump about to be elected, Stanhope sifts through the ruins of his own personal cataclysm in order to answer the big questions: What does it mean to love someone when you can’t love yourself? What is the point of success if you have no one to share it with? And is the end of the world BYOB?

Doug Stanhope has been drunkenly stumbling down the back roads and dark alleys of stand-up comedy for over a quarter of a century, roads laden with dank bars, prostitutes, cheap drugs, farm animals, evil dwarfs, public nudity, menacing third-world police, psychotic breaks, sex offenders, and some understandable suicides. You know, just for levity. While other comedians were seeking fame, Stanhope was seeking immediate gratification, dark spectacle, or sometimes just his pants.

Tom Segura is known for his twisted takes and irreverent comedic voice. But after a few years of crazy tours and churning out podcasts weekly, all while parenting two young children, he desperately needs a second to himself. It’s not that he hates his friends and family—he’s not a monster—he’s just beat. In this collection of stories, Tom combines his signature curmudgeonly humor with a revealing look at some of the ridiculous situations that shaped him and the ludicrous characters who always seem to seek him out.

Debauched, divorced, and courting death, Billy Ray Schafer is a comedian who has forgotten how to laugh. As this book's title suggests, Norm Macdonald tells the story of his life - more or less - from his origins on a farm in the-back-of-beyond Canada and an epically disastrous appearance on Star Search to his account of auditioning for Lorne Michaels and his memorable run as the anchor of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live - until he was fired because a corporate executive didn't think he was funny. But Based on a True Story is much more than a memoir; it's the hilarious, inspired epic of Norm's life.

Story
In April of 2004, the long downward spiraling of Amy Bingaman's mental illness could no longer be hidden or ignored much less written off as a side-product of a colorful and quirky character. With no family able to help and no resources, she was involuntarily locked up in the draconian, archaic labyrinth that is the Wyoming Mental Health System. Armed with only a pocket dictionary and any paper she could find to write on, Amy wrote not only as a journal but at times as her only coping mechanism to salvage what was left of a breaking mind in a love/hate relationship with her alter-ego.

Bob Odenkirk’s career is inexplicable. And yet he will try like hell to explicate it for you. Charting a “Homeric” decades-long “odyssey” from his origins in the seedy comedy clubs of Chicago to a dramatic career full of award nominations - with a side trip into the action-man world that is baffling to all who know him - it’s almost like there are many Bob Odenkirks! But there is just one and one is plenty. Featuring humorous tangents, wild characters, and Bob’s trademark unflinching drive, Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama is a classic tale told by a determined idiot.

Story
Marc Maron was a parent-scarred, angst-filled, drug-dabbling, love-starved comedian who dreamed of a simple life: a wife, a home, a sitcom to call his own. But instead he woke up one day to find himself fired from his radio job, surrounded by feral cats, and emotionally and financially annihilated by a divorce from a woman he thought he loved. He tried to heal his broken heart through whatever means he could find - minor-league hoarding, Viagra addiction, accidental racial profiling, cat fancying, flying airplanes with his mind - but nothing seemed to work. It was only when he was stripped down to nothing that he found his way back.

Story
The New York Times best-selling biography of an American comedy legend. After three years of sobriety, Chris Farley's life was at its creative peak until a string of professional disappointments chased him back to drugs and alcohol. He fought hard against them, but it was a fight he would lose in December 1997. Farley's fans immediately drew parallels between his death and that of his idol, John Belushi. Without looking deeper, however, many failed to see that Farley was much more than just another Hollywood drug overdose. In this officially authorized oral history, Farley's friends and family remember his work and life.

I lived 2016 with Doug...
I'm only to chapter 10, but had to stop to review the book. I expect it to only be better from here, and I already know how it ends.
I used to spend a lot of time depressed, drunk, in pain, in my basement, and in my own head wondering what I had worth living for. Most times Doug and his twisted, overlapping, knot filled circle of friends were my only companions. I was a podcast listener almost from the start. These were/are my only friends.
2016 was spent climbing out of that pit. Again, with Doug at my side. I followed my only friends as they trudged through & escaped their own pits. Like them, I think I made it through stronger and wiser.
Now reliving it all inside Doug's head brings it all back with new perspective. This book is golden. The best one yet. Doug's writing has improved immensely even if his ability to read out loud hasn't kept pace. I'm joking but he would agree.
Doug's ability to heap praise on those he loves tells far more about his character than his brand of humor would suggest. I can't recommend this book more. Absolutely beautiful.
Termites for life.

Hindsight is 2016
No one should have to endure a year like Doug did. He tells a story that can only make you want to give him a probably too long hug at the merch booth. His openness and humility is the reason we all would give our left arm to watch football at the funhouse just once. With that being said this is a story that will touch your heart and make you think of upping your Patreon monthly contribution. Don’t think do it. You can’t put a price on the content Doug provides.

A Rare Occasion
Out of the haze and melancholic debauchery that was 2016 for Douglas Stanhope, the coal of his soul and memory is pressured with hindsight and empathy to create a diamond of a book.
A tale of personal failure, compassion, interconnectedness, and the failures of our health care system, this book will leave the reader with a deeper understanding of not only the Stanhope Clan - but of themselves.
His best book yet.

Didn't expect it to go where it went!
After listening to Digging Up Mother I was worried this wouldn't live up to my high hopes. I needn't have worried, although the start is a little weaker as it doesn't at first appear to have the over-arching story of the first book (ie. His mother), however, when shit goes down, it *seriously* goes down.

Stanhope
This isn't his funniest, largely due to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding but I think it is his best. I felt the same as his friends about the Bingo split up and worse about what happened to her. There are still a lot of laughs. He's a lot more irreverent than me and it's freeing to listen to. The man is insightful. Making light of what most people wouldn't even talk about or admit to is a key to why he's so much more funny than most comedians today.
I was ironically trying to stay away at the time or at least minimise exposure to the Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard case and this gives you plenty of insights if you're starved for gossip on this media sensation. There's a devastating assessment and criticism of her from watching her tear strips off Johnny in front of him that reminds me very strongly of the Amber Heard in my own life. Well the stakes were much higher and the damage worse for Johnny and he's moving on with his life after the win he deserved so so will I.
The show that Stanhope talks about that all went flat and didn't work I think would have and could in the right hands. The jokes were good, the having Bingo showing up at the height of her mental illness to buy a gun poignant. Unfortunately I'm not a cashed up Hollywood producer, just a guy who re-signed up with Audible to listen to this book.

Brilliant!
Doug Stanhope is a comedy legend and a brilliant writer, his books have it all - humour, pathos, absurdity, honesty, tragedy and triumph. Can't wait for him to write another one!

heartbreakingly hopeful and real
Doug relates 2016, a year of catastrophe, weathered thanks to a lifetime of friends. Would that we all could create such networks.
Expertly read (as you'd expect from a man who has made what fortune he has from talking), with fewer extra cast members than "Digging Up Mother", this book should be eminently enjoyable to anyone who has ever loved our been loved.

A tonic for a gin soaked year
Doug's humour and humanity win out over a truely shithouse year. A story of odd and atypical love, Stanhope invokes the cheery nihilism that underpins all his work to tell the storied tale of 2016. Lyrical, at times poetic and very fucking funny this book has helped bring perspective to another shithouse year.

Stanhope's best work.
An ode to disaster and a love letter to Bingo. All of Stanhope's books are brilliant, but this is the most cohesive, the most refined and most moving. I pray he finds the material and the will for a fourth, but I'm not sure this one could be topped. Special shout out to the masterful titular passage. You'll see.

Story
Doug Stanhope has been drunkenly stumbling down the back roads and dark alleys of stand-up comedy for over a quarter of a century, roads laden with dank bars, prostitutes, cheap drugs, farm animals, evil dwarfs, public nudity, menacing third-world police, psychotic breaks, sex offenders, and some understandable suicides. You know, just for levity. While other comedians were seeking fame, Stanhope was seeking immediate gratification, dark spectacle, or sometimes just his pants.

Story
Doug Stanhope is one of the most critically acclaimed and stridently unrepentant comedians of his generation. What will surprise some is that he owes so much of his dark and sometimes uncomfortably honest sense of humor to his mother, Bonnie.

Story
Debauched, divorced, and courting death, Billy Ray Schafer is a comedian who has forgotten how to laugh. Over the course of seven spun-out days across the American Southwest, he travels from from hell gig to hell gig in search of a reason to keep living in this bleak and violent glimpse into the psyche of a thoroughly ruined man. Ex-inmate, ex-husband, ex-father - comedian is the only title Schafer has left. Trapped in the wreckage of his wasted career, Billy Ray knows the answer to the question: What happens when the opportunity doesn't come - or worse - it comes and goes?
