From the breakthrough international best-selling author of The Girl in the Ice, a breathtaking novel about a disgraced female detective’s fight for redemption. And survival....

Kate Marshall was a promising young police detective when she caught the notorious Nine Elms serial killer. But her greatest victory suddenly turned into a nightmare. Traumatized, betrayed, and publicly vilified for the shocking circumstances surrounding the cannibal murder case, Kate could only watch as her career ended in scandal.

Fifteen years after those catastrophic events, Kate is still haunted by the unquiet ghosts of her troubled past. Now a lecturer at a small coastal English university, she finally has a chance to face them. A copycat killer has taken up the Nine Elms mantle, continuing the ghastly work of his idol.

Enlisting her brilliant research assistant, Tristan Harper, Kate draws on her prodigious and long-neglected skills as an investigator to catch a new monster. Success promises redemption, but there’s much more on the line: Kate was the original killer’s intended fifth victim...and his successor means to finish the job.

Every character has been seen or written a million times before. Has author ever met women?

I'm so glad there's more to this series... Kate Marshall is an incredible character, and this was such a fun listen. I listened to it too fast, I couldn't stop.

I was hoping for something engaging and dark, but also fun- this hit the nail on the head.

I'm in love

Nine Elms: Dark, fast, and impossible to pause

When I hit play on this audiobook, I was lost within minutes, partly my fault for skipping the summary. At first, it felt a bit slow and confusing. But then… it clicked. And when it clicked, I was hooked. The pace took off like a train you couldn’t jump off (not that you’d want to).

The mystery was sharp and addictive, enough tension to keep my mind spinning without slipping into the ridiculous. The characters felt real, flaws and all. Some you root for, some you want to hug, and a few you just want to grab by the shoulders and shake.

Twists are sprinkled in at just the right moments. I guessed one of the big reveals early, but watching the characters catch up was still deliciously satisfying. The short, punchy chapters made it dangerously easy to keep listening “just one more” until I realized I’d burned through the whole thing.

If murder mysteries are your jam, especially ones that balance grit with great pacing, Nine Elms should be on your list. I’m already eyeing the rest of the series like candy.

Hard to pause!

I really enjoyed this book. Narration is excellent and story is good; though it wasn’t entirely believable which is why I gave it 4 stars. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series!

Great start to a new series!

It is difficult to believe that a person so prone to panic and indecision as the main character, could rise in the police ranks to detective constable.Tthis story is a good tutorial on how the Liberal / Progressive legal system favors criminals and facilitates criminal behavior. The characters are weak but the story has a good ending.

too much psychodrama
