Homicide Detective Max Rupert never fully accepted his wife's death, even when he believed that a reckless hit and run driver was the cause. But when he learns that in fact she was murdered, he devotes himself to hunting down her killers. Most of his life he had thought of himself as a decent man. But now he's so consumed with thoughts of retribution that he questions whether he will take that last step and enact the vengeance he longs for.

On a frozen lake near the US-Canadian border, he wrestles with a decision that could change his life forever, as his hatred threatens to turn him into the kind of person he has spent a career bringing to justice.

"Eskens infuses the old this-time-it's-personal trope with raw urgency, righteous indignation, and enough scorching action to melt every trace of the Minnesota snow in his finest hour to date." ( Kirkus, Starred Review)

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I wanted to know the rest of the story, I just don't feel this one was as engaging as the toher books in the series.

Best in a very long time. Narration and storyline/plot outstanding. If I could I would rate higher.

I enjoyed this book and R. C. Bray is always great. There is some pretty violent content in here if that bothers you.

Kept waiting for a profound twist... and then it ended. Overall entertaining so I am pleased with the purchase; I would recommend but the story doesn't make my top 5.

Decent

It's as if Eskens has watched a lot of cop tv and put every basic episode together to form this. Nothing special. No twists no turns. Never connected with the protagonist. Dialogue is standard. The mystery was mehhhhhhh. Ultimately the book is fine, just nothing interesting.

Good read by Bray.

This book kept me engaged the whole way through. It was fun to listen to a guys point of view since I've been listening to pshychological thrillers from a women's point of view for awhile now.
I liked the main character, and I loved the narrator, he did a great job.
I will definitely look for more from this author, he's an awesome writer!!!

R C Bray is, as always, excellent. He draws the listener into the emotion. Kudos to him.
