Publisher's Summary

Never before on audio! A number-one national best seller about a man who wakes up from a five-year coma able to see people's futures and the terrible fate awaiting mankind in The Dead Zone - a "compulsive page-turner" (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

Johnny Smith awakens from a five-year coma after his car accident and discovers that he can see people's futures and pasts when he touches them. Many consider his talent a gift; Johnny feels cursed. His fiancée married another man during his coma, and people clamor for him to solve their problems.

When Johnny has a disturbing vision after he shakes the hand of an ambitious and amoral politician, he must decide if he should take drastic action to change the future. The Dead Zone is a "faultlessly paced...continuously engrossing" (Los Angeles Times) novel of second sight.

What the Critics Say

"Originally published in 1979, this title is finally available for the first time as an audiobook, with actor James Franco narrating... Franco's impressive acting talent is on full display. As the troubled Johnny, he narrates with restraint and melancholy. As Stillson - an amoral businessman who cons his way towards the presidency - Franco oozes menace." (AudioFile)

    "Another Great Listen!"

Through the years I have read everything by Stephen King and now I am re-reading everything, but audibly. The Dead Zone was almost totally forgotten (since I'd read it so long ago) until I listened to it. Couldn't stop listening! King has the ability to make the characters into my dear friends, or just people I know. Incredible ability.

My favorite audible book EVER has always been Frank Muller's reading of The Green Mile, but the Dead Zone is right up there at the top of the list and James Franco does a wonderful job of reading it. Thank you for keeping me enthralled and it's a pleasure to be re-reading all of Stephen King's books............on to Duma Key.

    "Chilling"

I read this years ago, and couldn't resist the release of the audiobook. Though he became famous for his early horror tales like Carrie, this one is more similar to Mr. King's later works, where that feeling is more implied or psychological.

Playing around with the semi ethical question, "if you could go back in time and kill Hitler, would you?" Mr. King weaves a tale of a good man searching for his own life, in spite of extraordinary gifts. Although originally published in 1979, the feeling of unease is multiplied as memories from last year's election season come to mind, as though foretold.

"Really good narration!! Loved the listening experience"

if you're looking for a review on the story then read some on amazon...it's King which means great writing and engaging characters.
I more importantly wanted to rate James Franco's performance since the narrators make the biggest impact when we choose through audible. He was fantastic. Franco had a great range of characters and his lazy easy style was so pleasant to listen to. Some narrators scream or get too into portraying some intense emotion and it puts me on edge (the narrator for "It" for example) but Franco was just right.

I recommend this! We need more talented actors who know how to tell a story reading for audible, it's such a treat!

"Great book but too much whispering"

I'm a big fan of Stephen King, so it came as no surprise that I enjoyed this book. Not all of Mr King's novels leave me satisfied, but this one certainly did.

As for James Franco's performance, I enjoyed it as well. He has a talent for audio reading that I was honestly surprised to discover. He delivers each character with a unique and memorable voice that allows instant recognition even during scenes of dialogue between several people. I was never once confused by who was speaking at any moment.

My biggest complaint is with the frequent whispering. Too many times I found myself having to increase volume in order to understand what Mr Franco was saying, and then have to turn it down again when the next sentence was spoken at full volume, and then turn it back up because he had resumed whispering again. It's a powerful performance by all means, but lacks a practicality for the medium.

All in all however, I am glad that I downloaded this audiobook, and waiting for its release was worth it.

Franco was decent as a narrator but I could have done without the parts where he was whispering. This made it difficult for me to hear.

    "Fantastic beyond my expectations!!!"

I was waiting with baited breath for this audio version to be released. I was so worried about who was going to do the narration. I heard James Franco and thought "maybe he'll be okay"... oh, boy was I wrong. James Franco's performance was absolutely wonderful. He in bodied the characters perfectly and owned them.
The story is classic genius Stephen King and incredibly scary given our current political climate.
I deeply urge who ever reads this review to listen to this amazingly perfect version of
    "The Dead Zone"!!!

    "Still an amazing book."

I had read The Dead Zone when the book originally came out, as I have done with all Stephen King's books. In the past year or so, I have been listening to them all on audio books, and the experience is like running into an old friend after many years apart. It had been so many years since I read the book originally that I had forgotten quite a bit of the story, thus it was almost as if I was being introduced to the story for the first time. I still found the characters vividly drawn, the tale expertly woven, and the journey through the book enhanced by James Franco 's inspired narration. I have NEVER been disappointed by one of King's stories, and The Dead Zone is no exception. If anything, it was better the second time around.

    "Need to sleep?"

Franco should seriously stick to acting. The reading was pretty bad. Very monotone. The story started good and slowly got worse and worse. To the point where I thought no way it's going this route. No surprises. Just bad. Get a refund while you can. Hidden bodies is awesome.

    "Good book with great narration."

I liked this book. It was well written and James Franco is a really good, if not a great narrator. It seems like in most of Mr. King's books the Christians are fanatics and the Republicans are greedy war mongers. Please Mr. King were all individuals and one mold does not fit everyone......
