Publisher's Summary

Divorce attorney Harper James can't catch a break. Bad enough that she runs into her ex-hubby, Nick, at her sister's destination wedding, but now, by a cruel twist of fate, she's being forced to make a cross-country road trip with him. And her almost-fiancé back at home is not likely to be sympathetic.

Harper can't help that Nick has come blazing back into her life in all of his frustratingly appealing, gorgeous architect glory. But in Nick's eyes, Harper's always been the one. If they can only get it right this time, forever might be waiting - just around the bend.

Masterpiece

Kristan Higgins + Xe Sands = Perfection! Maybe the best yet. A perfect example of why I am addicted to audiobooks. Please Audible bring more of her older books to audio. They are a gift to your listeners.

Great Story/Great Listen

Can't get enough of the Kristan Higgins/Xe Sands combination. Getting ready to look for the next book to listen to, but I think I may have listened to all of them. Guess I will have to them again again. Great story, great listen.

I recommend Xe Sands narrates the next Susan Elizabeth Phillips book when it comes to Audible.

A Second Chance... Will it Work Out?

My One and Only by Kristan Higgins (Audio Edition)
Narrated by Xe Sands

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Let me start by saying, as always, Xe Sands’ narration was fantastic! I truly enjoyed listening to her. Now on to the book itself. Kristan Higgins is a wonderful writer, which is why I am having a hard time rating this book. Did I enjoy it- yes. Did it keep me listening way into the night ...yes. Did I love the characters.. yes. Am I left with conflicting feeling.. Sadly yes. So, here’s what I thought:

Pros:
• The Chemistry between Nick and Harper was heartfelt.
• Harper’s past making her the woman she is was understandable
• Nick’s Sarcasm and straightforward attitude.
• Even though some situations felt a bit forced it wasn’t unbelievable.

Cons:
• That even being as jaded as Harper was… I can’t believe the things she did sometimes.
• That Nick still trusts Harper after her repeated behaviour.
• Harper was a bit too immature still, and made ridiculous choices.
• That Harper could still act the way she did towards Nick, even knowing she would hurt him.
• I can’t see that they actually get their happily ever after, I just see repeating behaviour.

To be honest, I have trouble with most second chance books, because I find it hard to watch people go back to someone that hurt or was unfaithful to them. That said, I have read some great second chance books lately that do not deal with either of those situations.

This story’s plot is a kind of a misunderstanding and the mix of immaturity and lack of listening to your partner - at the same time.. As I think back over the story, Higgins did a wonderful job showing the young couples mistakes, however later.. When you think they both should have matured… perhaps only one of them did. Which is why it leaves me conflicted.

As I said above, this book kept me engaged and I didn’t want to stop listening as I truly did enjoy the characters. Would I recommend this story? Yes... With the disclaimer that it left me wondering if they would truly keep their happy ending.

Pretty Good

Any additional comments?

This is the story of Nick, Harper and Dennis. Harper takes her boyfriend, Dennis, to the wedding of her sister and her ex-husband's brother. Unfortunately she must deal with her ex-husband, Nick, who is best man at the wedding. The situation is certainly fraught with disaster. There is still a great deal of chemistry between Harper and Nick. Harper's boyfriend, Dennis, is not as hot for her as Nick was. Harper and Nick are thrown together due to circumstances and embark on a road trip. Dennis, who was floored, and not in a good way, by Harper's proposal may now be off the hook since Harper and Nick are on a road trip together. But is Dennis really off the hook? You have to listen to the book to find out. I think most readers will find it very entertaining.

Totally Clueless

While the writing and narration were both excellent, I found the totally clueless 34 year old lawyer Harper more annoying than entertaining. After the traumas of being deserted by her mother at age 13 and getting divorced at 22, most intelligent women in Harper's situation would have gotten therapy to deal with the losses.

I winced when Harper proposed to her hunky boyfriend Dennis, who she admitted was not too bright, just because she was afraid her eggs were getting old. When Harper ran into her ex-husband Nick at a wedding, the story of their short marriage wasn't surprising. Both were too young and immature with no communication skills.

I didn't like Nick's character who blamed Harper for their divorce, although he had pressured her into the marriage, insisted that she relocate to NYC then worked 80-90 hours a week. Not the actions of a man who genuinely loves a woman!

While there were cute and humorous moments and some interesting supporting characters, I couldn't connect with either Nick (self-absorbed, arrogant) or Harper (whiney).

Better than your average Chick Lit book

This was my first Kristan Huggins novel and if it's as good as MOAO, I'll be reading more of them. From the description of this book, it sounded like a typical chick lit novel but decided to give it a try. I was more than pleasantly surprised by the character development and the snappy writing. It's been a long time since I got choked up listening to a book but I did with this one. Do yourself a favor and read the rocky-road-to-romance story of Harper and Nick.

Way Too Long

I love Xe Sands but thus was a long, long story and while her performances are always fun to listen to, I got bored with this book. Had it been 10 chapters shorter, I might have enjoyed it more. Harper was an interesting character, and while I liked all of the people in the story, I just got..bored. Even the prologue was anticlimactic. I kept waiting to hear more about the dog.,,

Surprisingly fresh romance storyline

Amazing performance with a rich warm voice that’s a delight to listen to and a believable storyline that see-saws easily between funny and poignant. The characters are eloquently crafted and the timeline shifts expertly interwoven....the main characters both exasperate and entertain with dialogue that rings rich and true. I managed to forgive the “slightly” over-the-top ending because it worked. Absolutely worth your time. “Intimate” scenes are tame.
