Publisher's summary

In 2018, it is marked that a transformational year in American popular culture. In January, President Donald Trump signed H.R. 1242, the 400 Years of African-American History Act, into law, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the so-called African-American in this country. In February, superhero film Black Panther broke box office records with its predominantly black cast. As the year progressed, we witnessed social media memes titled “BBQ Becky,” “Permit Patty,” “Corner Store Caroline,” “Golf Cart Gail,” and more, all targeting white women for calling police on black Americans for participating in daily life. Gender strife also increased its pace as the women’s #MeToo movement saw the rise of a male counterpart #MGTOW, or “Men Going Their Own Way.”

How did we get here?

This is the question jazz musician and poet Rafa Selase asks as he journeys to the African Slave Coast in an attempt to reconcile a tumultuous past with present-day chaos. My Journey of Faith To The African Slave Coast, Reconciling a Past Not So Long Ago, documents his intense seven-day journey with a group of unexpected travel companions as he discovers some uncomfortable truths about the Transatlantic Slave Trade, religion, race, and gender. He delivers an unflinchingly honest critique of a nation birthed in atrocities and mired in identity politics, while also seeking to discover the true identity of a people whose past has been all but erased.

With six hours of vivid storytelling, Selase weaves in his trademark poetry (complete with original music in the audio version) and redefines what it means to be “woke” in America today. He offers solutions for how all Americans can reconcile with the tragedies of their national history, and creates a roadmap for black Americans to become the leaders they were born to be.

Listen Through to the end. You will be glad you did!

I am so impressed by the book. A friend recommended it to me, so I gave it a shot. I admit, I skipped some of the timeline at the beginning a little bit, because I am not a big history buff. But then later in the book I realize how important it was and went back to listen. Wow. This book is beyond words. I love the music! I’ve never heard anything like it. I am going to purchase the print copy too, because I really want to sit down and read it through again. I feel like I need to digest it even more. There is just so much in it. I have a much better understanding of reparations, of the Bible, and so many other issues relevant to today. I highly recommend this book. If you’re like me and struggle with that history portion, skip it and come back to it later. But don’t put the book down… it’s an important read all the way through to the end. Very well done.

Educational/ inspirational

This is an amazing book, I am eager to keep reading. I have already increased my knowledge on the history of slavery even though I am only on chapter three. Im also inspired to be a better person ; for the mere fact that we are all humans. There is only one race ; The human race. So we need to stop all this nonsense of color origin sexual orientation. In my opinion this book brings new insight that I’ve only begun to discover. The only feedback I have is I’m not an Audible listener. I’m finding it very difficult to stay focused. First I prefer to have the book so that I can write notes and reference and highlight etc. second. This mans voice is so soothing. He brings me to a zen place and makes me want to take a nap. So kudos to you G. Your amazing 😉 also want to touch upon the music 🎶 played throughout the book. Beautiful beautiful music 🎶 ( now get me a paperback version please and thank you. ) 🌼🌼🌼🌸🌸🌸🌹🌹🌹🌹🌷🌷🌷

Incredible Information and Research

This information that is touched on by Rafa Selase is GROUND BREAKING. Having gone through our compromised, distorted schools of "EDUCATION". This information is OUTSIDE the MANIPULATIONS of SOCIETY. I don't consider myself a big reader. I chose to listen with the audio book version, which allowed me to sit back and just absorb. Selase did a GREAT JOB in his RESEARCH and CONVEYANCE of the INFORMATION. I was not only IMPRESSED with his thorough research, but ASTOUNDED with his findings. This book has a wealth of information, that is EMPOWERING to those of us today and INSPIRING for our kids of the future. I am going to purchase a hard copy to have and add to my books of history. I encourage all to get HARD COPIES of REAL INFORMATION. You never know what's going to happen with this digital age. I SALUTE Selase in his EFFORTS to EDUCATE and to bring CHANGE to our SOCIETY through his MUSIC and INFORMATION.
