A churchyard discovery. A shocking secret. A deadly confrontation.

London, 1890. When the body of a wealthy widow is found in the neglected graveyard of St Anne’s Church, Soho, Emma Langley and Penny Green soon discover her respectable façade concealed a web of bitter enemies.

From a disgraced doctor stripped of his livelihood to a governess whose reputation was destroyed by lies, the victim, Mrs Melbourne, left a trail of devastation in her wake.

Then Mrs Melbourne’s Belgravia mansion is consumed by a mysterious fire. Emma and Penny must race to decipher water-damaged papers salvaged from the ruins that could hold the key to the truth.

But as anonymous threatening letters arrive warning them to abandon their investigation, the friends realise they’re hunting someone who will kill again to protect their secret. In the shadow-filled streets of Victorian London, can Emma and Penny expose the murderer before they become the next victims?

An atmospheric Victorian mystery that takes you from the crumbling graveyards of Soho to the grand squares of Belgravia–and will keep you listening late into the night.

I loved the latest installment in the historical whodunit series staring Emma Langley and Penny Blakely. Like the other books in the series, it had a layered storyline, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, suspense, and the tiniest smidge of romance. The glimpses of everyday life and history in the 19th century was woven beautifully with this intriguing murder mystery. The history nerd and the secret detective in me are both loving this series. Emma is a young widow who teaches piano. Following the death of her deceitful and dishonest husband, Emma and her good friend Penny have investigated several crimes together. When Emma encounters Clara crying after having found a murder victim and been interrogated by the police, Emma and Penny agree to look into the death to help exonerate her. This begins the investigation into Mrs Melbourne, a wealthy widow known for her charity works but perhaps there was more beyond her public persona that may have resulted in her death. The investigation leads Emma and Penny in surprising directions complete with dead ends, plot twists, danger, multiple suspects, long buried secrets, and surprising revelations. As always, there are smaller side personal story arcs and social commentary especially about women which enriches and gives greater dimension to the main plot line and the characters. I am excited to read more in this series and continue to see Emma’s growth in her strength, power and confidence.

Eilidah Beaton did a phenomenal job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.

Our two illustrious ladies investigate more suspicious murders in 1800's England all the while they receive annonomous threatening letters seeking to convince them to give up their case. A delightful mystery set in Regency England when women were supposed to be stay at home decorations, not newspaper reporters or investigators. Don't miss this fabulous series! 😍
