Publisher's summary

It’s the Roaring Twenties. London’s bright young things are partying, Soho’s nightlife is buzzing, and Augusta Peel is hiding in her basement.

She has a reason to hide there: it’s home to her Bloomsbury workshop where she repairs old, neglected books. After a busy time during the war, all Augusta wants is peace and quiet—even if it is routinely disturbed by the tube trains beneath her feet.

But events take a turn when Augusta agrees to chaperone nineteen-year-old Harriet Jones on a date. Failing to get her home on time, she ends up in a riotous nightclub. She can’t imagine the evening getting much worse when the police raid it. But then the murder happens.

Who shot Jean Taylor? An old acquaintance at Scotland Yard learns Augusta was near the murder scene and persuades her to help with his investigation. But how can a humble book repairer navigate Soho’s world of actresses, gangsters, and theater impresarios to discover the truth?

A new historical cozy mystery from the author of the Penny Green Victorian mystery series and the Churchill & Pemberley cozy mystery series.

Quaint historical who dunnit

This is an easy listen with engaging characters. It is not as complex as some mystery novels, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I had no idea if I would like this book but

It was great! It reminded me of Catherine Airde’s style of writing. I will certainly listen to the rest of this series and the narrator was wonderful.❤️

Pretty good

Mystery was good with a few layers. The narration was good, but sometimes the voices of some of the characters got mixed up. The historical notes at the end are very interesting.

Enjoyable

I’m not usually one for historical books, however this one was a pleasant read. I do enjoy history and it was nice at the end to get a little history lesson from the author. The book kept me entertained and guessing!

I liked the story

I liked the story but did not like the narrator for a number of reasons mostly because of how she portrayed each character as being simpering, petulant or unpleasant. I did, however, like the writing, story line and Augusta Peel as well as the other lead characters. I look forward to the rest of the books in the series…it’s too bad they are all narrated by Sarah Nicole.

Clever, Pleasant, Entertaing

I was not sure I would like this book, but took a chance since I could not find anything I wanted to listen to. Glad I did, Augusta Peel is a likeable person, and her relationships to all others in the book are realistic. Just ordered the next book.

Great Series

I have now listened to the first three books of the series and I am looking forward to number four and beyond. The mysteries are excellent. The author plays fair with the clues. I am eager to learn more about Augusta. The narrator only enhances the stories. Definitely worth the time and the credit.

A thoroughly enjoyable historical mystery

Augusta Peel is a bookbinder who has a secret past. While chaperoning a friend's daughter at a nightclub, a police raid occurs and a body is found. Who could be the murderer? She finds herself helping to solve it. Loads of fun, and a book anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie novels will enjoy. (I docked a star from the performance, because I sometimes couldn't tell who was who during conversations. But it wasn't so bad that I couldn't follow along. Just needed a few rewinds.)
