Story
Women around the globe are buying and consuming alcohol at alarming rates never seen before. But is it doing us any favors? Is it really that treat or reward that we deserve? Lotta Dann thinks not. In The Wine O'Clock Myth, Lotta takes an in-depth and eye-opening look at women's drinking habits. Written through the lens of her own story and her work in the field of addiction and recovery, Lotta explores the privileged position alcohol holds in our society, the way the liquor industry targets women and the damaging "Wine Mom" social media culture.

Like many women, Clare Pooley found the juggle of a stressful career and family life a struggle, so she left her successful role as a managing partner in one of the world's biggest advertising agencies to look after her family. She knew the change wouldn't be easy, but she never expected to find herself an overweight, depressed, middle-aged mother of three who was drinking more than a bottle of wine a day and spending her evenings Googling 'am I an alcoholic?'

What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor", a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

When Kristi stopped drinking, she started noticing things. Like when you give up a debilitating habit, it leaves a space, one that can’t easily be filled by mocktails or ice cream or sex or crafting. And when you cancel Rosé Season for yourself, you’re left with just summer, and that’s when you notice that the women around you are tanked - that alcohol is the oil in the motors that keeps them purring when they could be making other kinds of noise. In her sharp, incisive debut essay collection, Coulter reveals a portrait of a life in transition.

Story
When Rebecca Weller’s pounding, dehydrated head woke her at 3:00 am, yet again, she stared at the ceiling, wondering why the hell she kept doing this to herself. At 39 years of age - and a health coach, no less - she knew better than to down several bottles of wine per week. Her increasingly dysfunctional relationship with alcohol had to stop, but after decades of social drinking, she was terrified of what that might mean. How could she live a joyful existence, without alcohol? How would she relax, socialize, or celebrate - without wine?

Story
For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was "the gasoline of all adventure." She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. Drinking felt like freedom, part of her birthright as a strong, enlightened 21st-century woman. But there was a price. She often blacked out, waking up with a blank space where four hours should be. Mornings became detective work on her own life. A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, Blackout is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure - the sober life she never wanted.

What she also realized was that she wasn't the only one. Lush is a gripping memoir that examines Kerry's struggles with alcohol, a struggle that a rising number of middle-aged women are facing. Wonderfully poignant and relatable, Lush follows Kerry as she attempts to rediscover the awe in her life, leaving mistakes, regrets, and the bottle behind her.

In a culture where sipping "rosé all day" is seen as the epitome of relaxation, "grabbing a drink" the only way to network; and meeting at a bar the quintessential "first date", many of us are left wondering if drinking alcohol really is the only way to cultivate joy and connection in life. Jardine Libaire and Amanda Eyre Ward wanted to live spontaneous and luxurious lives, to escape the ordinary and enjoy the intoxicating. Their drinking, however, had started to numb them to the present moment instead of unlocking it.

Punctuated by potent, laugh-out-loud sarcasm, Bottled offers practical suggestions on how to be a sober, present-in-the-moment mom, one day at a time, and provides much needed levity on an issue too often treated with deadly seriousness.

Publisher's Summary
Mrs. D is an alcoholic, albeit a very nice, respectable, articulate, and groomed alcoholic.
This is an honest, upfront, relatable account of one suburban housewife's journey from miserable wine-soaked boozer to self-respecting sober lady.
This audiobook is an inspirational tale of self-transformation, addiction, and domesticity. This audiobook lays out the entirely unexpected solo journey Mrs. D took in the first year of her sobriety and reveals the incredible online support that came through on her confessional blog, a blog intended to be a private online diary but turned into something else quite remarkable.

I couldn't put it down. It was a joy to listen to. As a fellow boozy housewife, I related to Lotta Dann so much it was incredible. I enjoyed her writing style and the layout of the book as well. This book inspires me to stay sober and that everything is going to be okay. Also, the reader, Cat Gould, really helped the book to come alive.

Great start ....
But the second half of the book is waaaay too much reading complementary comments from the blog. Now had they been constructive criticism or asking advice, great but the majority were just saying how great the blog was. One or two, fine but it was a few at a time. As quit lit it's definitely worth getting but the first half is the best

Surprisingly Insightful and Authentic
I wasn't sure at first. This book definitely grew on me and I didn't want it to end. Yet it ended at what seemed the right place. I've read a lot of addiction books and this was unconventional and somewhat refreshing. Funny at times but mostly the strength and insights of Mrs D were what made it a compelling listen.

A lovely honest writer, but put me right off sobriety
The narrator has a lovely voice, the writing is heartfelt & honest & shows true bravery in showing vulnerability... but as a forty-something functioning alcoholic wifey it put me right off trying to stop drinking. Gave me the actual fear.
The first part, describing how she drank, had so many moments of recognition for me “oh my god I do that!!” “Yes, yes, blimey yes!” & I felt less alone in my struggle.
But then she goes into the “I’ve stopped & it’s bloody awful” for what seemed like an interminable amount of time. So depressing - how she gritted her teeth to get through & every social event was an endurance, life was boring & crappy, for literally months & months.
At the end there’s a teeny whisper of “I see things more clearly now & it’s better” but a drop in the ocean after the awfulness she describes previously.
I ended up in tears thinking I’ll never get dry. A good story if you’re not seeking encouragement yourself.

Unfortunately
This book was quite nice. I listened to it on audible. I have gone through what Mrs D talks about and got worse. I don't have the lovely gift of a supportive high achieving hubby and Beautiful children nor a network of friends in two different places. I think that you need to be selfish about getting clean. So that's fine. I hope sincerely that she helped others like her. She is a journalist. So should right a good book.

A marvellous book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I learned so much from it. It is a book for anyone who is thinking about giving up alcohol, or for anyone who has already given up alcohol. It made me realise that sobriety is hard work, & is not all joy but that it is better than boozing, ultimately. I can relate to all of the raw feelings, after giving up drinking. I recommend this book as an awesome, enlightening listen!
