Publisher's summary

The classic New York Times best seller has helped millions of women cope with and heal from the grief of losing their mothers.

Although a mother's mortality is inevitable, no book has discussed the profound lasting and far reaching effects of this loss until Motherless Daughters, which became an instant classic. More than 20 years later, it is still the go-to book that women of all ages look to for comfort, help, and understanding when their mother dies. Building on interviews with hundreds of mother-loss survivors, Edelman's personal story of losing her mother, and recent research in grief and psychology, Motherless Daughters reveals the shared experiences and core identity issues of motherless women:

  • Why the absence of a nurturing hand shapes a woman's identity throughout her lifespan
  • How present day relationships are defined by past losses
  • How a woman can resolve past conflicts and move toward acceptance and healing
  • Why grief really is not a linear passage but an ongoing cyclical journey
  • How the legacy of mother loss shifts with the passage of time

Not for everyone

People seem to love this book but if you are looking for help with the loss of your lol than this is NOT the book for you, it’s just stories of how other people deal but if you don’t find your study here than you just can relate completely. In my opinion.

depressing

If you don't have these issues you start thinking maybe you should if you are motherless. Life is hard and everyone has their struggles. It was nice to know that the problems I do have could be because I was motherless. But it brought up things I hadn't even thought of. Made me feel sorry for myself even more. I have not finished the book. Maybe I will and refresh this review.

Touching

I am a motherless daughter, even though I lost my mum when I was 32. Still, I found many themes in this book that resonated with me

For Anyone Who has Experienced Loss or Abandonment

I was actually given a hard copy of this book by my own mother in 1995. I could never bring myself to reading it because it hurt too much that my own mother would give me something like this, but recently I decided to go ahead and listen to this 20th anniversary edition. After years of trying to get her approval, and only getting hurt everytime, I finally understand why I do the things I do and did some of the things I did. This book doesn't excuse bad behavior at all but it does help with an understanding of personality that only someone who keeps trying to get love from people but also pushing everyone away would really appreciate.

For those who have lost their mother's young

This is a great book, particularly for those who have lost their mother's early in their lives (ie childhood, teens or early 20s)
