NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK

Nothing brings a family together like a murder next door.

“I just loved how intriguing the mystery is but also the dynamics between a grandmother, a mother, and a teenage daughter." —Reese Witherspoon

Think: Gilmore Girls, but with murder.

High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

Then Jack—tiny in stature but fiercely independent—happens upon a dead body while kayaking. She quickly becomes a suspect in the homicide investigation, and the Rubicon women are thrown into chaos. Beth thinks Lana should focus on recovery, but Lana has a better idea. She’ll pull on her wig, find the true murderer, protect her family, and prove she still has power.

With Jack and Beth’s help, Lana uncovers a web of lies, family vendettas, and land disputes lurking beneath the surface of a community populated by folksy conservationists and wealthy ranchers. But as their amateur snooping advances into ever-more dangerous territory, the headstrong Rubicon women must learn to do the one thing they’ve always resisted: depend on each other.

Amateur sleuth meets family drama

Mother Daughter Murder Night is a lighthearted, who-done-it, mystery murder with a dash of fun and generational drama.

Although it was predictable, I gave it 5 stars because it kept my attention and the mother, daughter relationships evolved in a meaningful way.

If you like murder mysteries that are less horrific, police procedural and more amateur-sleuth, searching for clues, then you’ll like this one!

I liked the relationship progression between the three generations of women and how they are forced to work out their differences to solve the case. I also liked learning about the California coastline sloughs and the wildlife that live there. It was a fresh setting for a murder mystery.

Great read!

The beginning, as in the first few pages did not spark my interest, however as the story continues I rather enjoyed it. I wish there was a little more attention to some of the minor characters who later become essential to the story line. However, overall a good read (or listen).

Good, overall.

The story is good but the crime part of it, just doesn’t add up.
Is maybe for child , missing so many facts about the crime etc.
The family interaction between the main characters is the best part of the book.

Wonderful story of mothers & daughters

I loved this book so much… not only because of it’s location; which is my home, but also for the wonderful story of estranged relationships that find their way to unconditional love. Thank you Nina Simon!! I want more.

The location drew me in and I was hooked

I wanted to listen to this book because Elkhorn Slough is a place I could spend hours or days enjoying. I was fun hearing all the familiar locations. Locations that usually aren’t listed in books or movies
