Story
Morton "Jacko" Jackman isn't afraid of anything. He's a former Navy SEAL sniper, and he's been in more firefights than most people have had hot meals. Lauren Dare scares the crap out of him. Gorgeous, talented, and refined, she's the type of woman who could never be interested in a roughneck like him. So he's loved her fiercely in secret, taken her art classes, and kept a watchful but comfortable distance. Until now.

A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper. Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light”. But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all.

Bud-alicious hero
Lieutenant Tyler "Bud" Morrison is scoping out a seedy club when he sets eyes on Claire. She looks like a princess and she's completely out of her element in the wild dance-club. When she's abandoned by her friend and accosted by leering male revellers, he swoops in and plays the gallant knight to her fair damsel and takes her home. Expecting to give her a handshake and a nice-knowing-ya on her doorstep, he's stunned to hear her invite him inside......for coffee.
Claire Parks is free of the leukaemia that has ravaged her body for nearly a decade. She's finally able to shake off her father's suffocating but well meaning strictures and is going to live a little. In case she hasn't told you, she's fine. The handsome stranger named Bud comes to her rescue and as he drives her home, she works up the courage to ask him inside......for coffee.
They don't have any coffee, but they do spend the weekend together in naked splendour, where they engage in some seriously kinky iambic pentameter sex. After the course of the 48 hours, their idyllic weekend is busted when Claire's father comes to see her and when he sees Bud, instead of being upset and appalled, he's frankly grateful and relieved. Her father reveals to Bud how he has been terrified of leaving his girl alone in the big, bad world and he hopes he can leave her in his capable hands. His fears transfer to Bud and suddenly he's treating Claire with kid gloves. Claire is fine and refuses to live in another suffocating parent/child relationship, especially now that she's a healthy adult. Just when she's got Bud back where she wants him, the danger surrounding her friend, Suzanne, spills over into her life. The brutal torture/murder of a friend spurs Bud into protective mode and without thinking of her feelings, stashes her away, determined to protect her from a desperate man who is out to protect his secrets.
This was a great book. There was hardly any time wasted on stupid ditherings between the hero and the heroine and they right away acknowledged that they loved each other. Whether or not they can live together is a different story however and I thought it was cute. Now that Claire has experienced hard, screaming sex, she wants more of it. (sheesh, who wouldn't) Unfortunately once Bud realizes that she used to be sick as a child, he treats her like porcelain and she's not liking it. When she comes to his office dressed for seduction, Bud's half hearted protestations wane in the face of her aggressive advances and it's really funny. I really liked Claire and her ability to embrace life and I thought Bud's attempts to be a gentleman was a hoot. We get some glimpses into John and Suzanne's HEA and I liked how they are still evolving as a couple.
This was a very amusing, sexy and exciting sequel to Midnight Man. Well, it's not exactly a sequel. Apparently, the events in Midnight Run are coinciding with the events in Midnight Man and Midnight Run also sets up the story for Midnight Angel, so the three stories definitely need to be read in order or you are going to get confused. There isn't as much outside drama in this book as was in the first book, it mostly runs on self inflicted angst. There was a lot more humour in this one though as opposed to John and Suzanne's story but Bud is no less a man than John was. In fact, he's much more forceful in bed than John was. He's a little more commanding and dominant, too. Delicious. I can't wait to read Midnight Angel. Enjoy!

Illogical even for a fairytale
Second book I read from that author, second in this series. She obviously has a thing for men who are half-witted apes and instalove + HEA after five minutes. Yet, in this one she has a heroine that is mind-blowingly irritating. She breaks off the engagement for something the hero could not have a clue about, yet she wouldn't discuss it, before she breaks it off. She makes a half-assed attempt at seduction in a place and time that is totally inept, but she wouldn't say one sentence that would make everything right. Or was it just an attempt for creating drama? I don't know. But it made me lose my interest and sympathy for the character.
And where have the terrorists come from? And where has the editor been instead of editing?

A sexy romance with all the right ingredients!!
Any additional comments?
Midnight Run is a fabulous, fast paced read! I love reading all types of erotic romance books, but there's just something about a hot, intense love story between one man and one woman who can't get enough of each other that will hook me every time. This book was like that for me. I was engrossed in the book from page one and I couldn't wait to read more. Bud is a strong, earthy, caring and tender alpha male. He's my favorite kind of hero. Bud is welcome to recite poetry to me anytime! Claire is a woman who has gone through a lot in her life and survived. Now she's ready to celebrate life, not wallow in her past. Every scene flowed perfectly into the next and the many love scenes were extremely sensual and hot. I loved that the author showed both the hero and heroine's point of view. The scene with Claire's father was so touching. If you're looking for a book that will send sensual tingles running down your spine and other places, this is the book to read! MIDNIGHT RUN is a must read and definitely a keeper. If Lisa Marie Rice isn't on your auto buy list, she should be.

Great Characters - Long on Sex, Short on Mystery.
This is the sixth book featuring the same seven couples I've read. I just bought the seventh (I started the series backwards - loved the first four so much I had to know how the bosses and police Lt. got their wives) and can't wait to read Akegra and Senior's story. i think the first four are a much better balance of mystery and sex
The sex is more graphic than I prefer, but the characters and stories are so compellimg I had to read them all!!! I also think that, while graphic and too long and drawn out, the sex is not gratuitous. it paints a very clear picture of the characters and their motivations for actions and reactions,

Is there anything you would change about this book?
I wasn't sure about the narrator. I didn't seem to fully grasp her voices in the story telling. I was left wanting more. The storyline was decent. There just didn't seem to be much banter between the characters. Claire's friends had more conversation than Claire and Bud.
What did you like best about this story?

Good Story.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The ending was exciting.
Any additional comments?
This was a good story for a romance. Predictable in places and alittle overdone on the sex scenes. I felt like the female character, Claire, was a little annoying at times as she was over reacting to situations in the book... It is a typical storyline but not hideous.

EXCITING AND SEXY
Any additional comments?
Midnight Man was an all-around good listen. The narration was well done and the plot was exciting and enticing. I liked how well-rounded each of the characters were and how Rice seemed to make this book sexy and carnal while also bringing some modern femininity to her females characters and protective dominance to her males. In a round about way (whether intentionally or unintentionally), Rice addresses the need women have to be both independent and self-sufficient, but also protected and cherished. This is an age-old emotional need which is why we are so complex -- haha!
Be prepared to commit to the series (3 books so far) because Rice ends each book rather abruptly, but addresses the hanging ends in the next....
