Publisher's Summary

Magic is her birthright....

The daughter of one of the strongest magical lineages, Ninian Malcom Siddons is a powerful witch. Determined to use her magic only for good, she lives a simple, solitary life as a healer in her village, where she meets Drogo.

A man of science doesn't believe in anything he can't see....

Lord Drogo Ives believes only logic and science can explain the wonders of the universe and doesn't believe the local folklore about Malcolm witches and Ives men - until he meets Ninian. Despite the odds against them and their (many) differences, the bond between Drogo and Ninian grows stronger each moment they are together...until the chaos and danger surrounding them forces each to decide: their love...or their lives....

Audiobook is different than print book

I real this title years ago, and absolutely loved it. When I got an Audible Escape membership, I was thrilled to see this was on here and decided to give it a go. I followed along in the print book, with the audiobook. I found out that it was not the same book. Sentences, scenes, and entire chapters had been added to the audiobook, that I didn't have in my print version. I also felt that the story line was changed. Things happened in the audiobook, that didn't happen in my print book. It could be because I have a first edition printing, and the story was changed in subesequent printings. These differences really took me out of the story, and I feel like I would have liked it better had I just read the print book alone.

DNF

This book is ALL about making babies. Ninian is a witch AND a midwife. There is some strange local legend about the Malcolms and the Ives getting together and cursing the town. So of course, Ninian Malcolm and Drogo Ives get together and (*mild early spoiler)....

.... Make a baby. Then the rest of the book (as far as I made it about midway) is about her being prego, him being jaded by unfaithful women while really wanting an heir, her superstitions about birthing babies and the like. She thinks its a girl, he thinks its a boy. Blah, blah, blah...

So, a little personal TMI... I am infertile. Probably more like barren at this late in the game. I freaking HATE books like this. If a book ia going to revolve around nothing but propagating and gestating babies, then it is absolutely not a book I want to read. I truly wish authors at least mentioned when 99.9% of their story centers around breeding in their book blurbs.

The romance is driven by... You guessed it, the state of Ninian's uterus. I'm not even sure the whole witchery/ 'danger' thats advertised in the blurb is every going to be addressed beyond Ninian's superstitions and Drogo's pragmatism. The two characters have nothing whatsoever in common besides wanting to sleep together. Maybe it gets better. Patricia Rice usually writes decent books, and I know I am biased, but life is hard enough without having to immerse my free time in how women are "made to have babies" and nothing more.

content

The story started with sexual content in the very beginning. Not good for a teenager. Very disappointing!

A magical romance!

This is a very well written story, opposite attracts and at times complete each other. I love the leading female character with her special gifts. The supporting characters especially the brothers were very amusing. The narrator has was exceptional. He mad the story come to life.

I'm perplexed

It's like watching a movie with Jack Nicholson and Hellen Hunt with no real story. Author you created great characters and didn't give them a great story. It's like you don't believe in magic so you can't right it. Your so close I'm an old guy and you had me hoping. Good luck

Horrible

Author jumps seems constantly without any ending or explanation. I found myself constantly questioning what was happening w/out being able to focus on the plot. Her writing skills are terrible. Needless to say I will not be wasting anymore of my time on her or her novels. The narrator was great though. Give the poor guy some better work next time!

Problematic

This story has an interesting setting, but that's all I can say for it. The characters are one-dimensional and stereotypical. The author constantly head-hops, and the character's internal thoughts persistently conflict with themselves and with the character's actions. What little tension this story has is broken by all of these factors, but that's not what made me stop reading at the 3 hour mark.

That's when the heroine is dosed with an aphrodisiac without her knowledge or consent, and Sir Ives takes advantage of her compromised state. I cannot see this man as anything but a predator now. This romance is dead.

A brilliant story

…..with a twist. An earl who doesn’t believe in magic, a woman who has been brought up to believe and an excellent plot that brings it all together in the end.

Entertaining book

Ninian is the village healer and Drogo is an Earl. Drogo thinks she’s just the local healer and doesn’t realise that her family are high born. Ninian comes from a line of “gifted” women but Drogo only believes in facts and the sciences. It’s a battle of wills between them as their relationship evolves. I found this to be a very enjoyable book to listen to, it has a good story line and excellent narration.

Well worth listening to.

Took me a little to get into this one could’ve been the narrator not sure but once I got to a certain point, wow I became hooked. Loved the tension & connection between the main characters and the magical side to the story. I will definitely be listening to the next one.

Malcolm’s and Ives

The Malcolm’s are witches, and it’s rare for any of them to bear male children.
The Ives are logical, realists. It’s rare for them to sire female babies.
There is antipathy between the families and generations have warned them of marrying into either family.
Drogo, is the eldest of the current Ives and he came into his inheritance in his teens.
He has a large family of brothers and half brothers, that keep him very busy,
He also has family business interests, that are important to pay for education and the headaches his family put him through.
Ninian is a healer in the village.
She and Ninian become a couple. They go to London where Drogo has most of his business interests and Ninian has difficulty in making Drogo believe she needs to return to her home to have their child.
