Eve Dallas is one tough cop. She's got no problem dealing with a holiday reveler in a red suit who plunges 37 stories and gives new meaning to the term "sidewalk Santa". But when she gets back to the station and Trudy Lombard shows up, it's all Eve can do to hold it together.

Instantly, she's plunged back into the past, to the days when she was a vulnerable, traumatized girl - trapped in foster care with the twisted woman who now sits in front of her, smiling.

Trudy claims she just wanted to see how Eve was doing. But Eve's husband, Roarke, suspects otherwise - and his suspicions prove correct when Trudy arrives at his office demanding money in exchange for keeping the ugly details of his wife's childhood a secret. Barely restraining himself, Roarke shows her the door - and makes it clear that she'd be wise to get out of New York and never bother him or his wife again.

But just a few days later, Trudy's found on the floor of her hotel room, a mess of bruises and blood.

A cop to the core, Eve is determined to solve the case, if only for the sake of Trudy's bereaved son. Unfortunately, Eve is not the only one to have suffered at this woman's hands, and she and Roarke will follow a circuitous, dangerous path to find out who turned this victimizer into a victim.

Some books don’t turn out so well in audio format but this particular book and the series as a whole is great to listen to. There are occasional audio hiccups but for the most part the reading performance is excellent.

Easy story to follow

Would you listen to Memory in Death again? Why?

Yes. I love the way Susan Ericksen brings these characters to life. Added to the character development genius of J.D. Robb and you almost always can count on a hit.

I can almost see the characters

As as a light "girls" book with a bit of mystery thrown in, this is a satisfying novel. Even though we hear about some turmoil experienced by the heroine in her earier life, we never really get the pathos that one becomes accustomed to with, for example a character created by James Lee Burke. The intimate scenes between Eve and her husband are fun and sometimes steamy and also serve to keep the book on the lighter side. As a mysterm it falls short ... so I just decided to take it as it is .. and enjoy it.

Good book if you don't ask too much of it

What happens when a monster from your past shows up and demands blackmail money from you and your spouse? Somebody rids you of them by killing her off. Now Lt. Eve Dallas has to stand for the woman who tormented her in her childhood and had the audacity to try and blackmail her. Eve's first foster mother,Trudy Lombard, shows up in New York on a holiday trip with her son and daughter-in-law. Going to visit Trudy and make their positions clear, Eve and Roarke discover the battered body of Trudy in her locked hotel room. Killed while Eve and Roarke were hosting a Christmas party, it's soon revealed that Momma Tru had battered her own body in a further attempt to extort money. Now the question is, who took advantage of that battering and finished Momma Tru off for good. A riveting tales that delves into Eve's past, dredging up memories best left forgotten and revealing the diabolical schemes and doings of Trudy Lombard. Another thrilling adventure into the life of Lt. Eve Dallas, top murder cop in the NYPSD. Well worth the read, J D Robb at her best once again.
