Publisher's summary

Inspired by true stories, this fictional novella is a fast-moving, unbelievable story of how a small boy in upper New York State begins life in a dysfunctional family but makes the best of it.

As an older adult, Benjamin Patrick speaks to groups of people struggling with addiction to inspire others to take life by the boot straps. On his own for most of his life and without any proper parenting, Benjamin tells about events with humor and a no-nonsense, honest attitude.

Motorcycles, fast cars, fast women, reckless sex, losing his children, alcohol, daredevil actions, near-death situation, and dealing with death lead him to find solace in horses and a strong love interest. Benjamin Patrick wastes no time in telling it like it is and as he sees it.

"There are too many people on this earth, and I figure I populated half of it. Life is to be lived, and I'll not apologize for that. It was a different, wild world where I was born in upstate (North Country) New York in cow country. There was nothing to do for teenagers and young adults, except to live on the edge, and we did that. We learned to work hard, live harder, and sometimes, die young."

Benjamin lived through many events, some dealt to him and some of his own making. The stories are sometimes tragic, sometimes humorous, and sometimes too wild to believe. The story doesn't end in New York state. Follow Ben on his motorcycle across the states as he creates more ironic chaos and truly becomes Yankee Cowboy.

Great book

This is my first encounter with a book from Cookie Reese. But it will not be my last. The stores kept me involved and wanting to hear what happens next.
The Barstow was excellent. I hope to listen to more books narrated by Hazencruz.

Interesting but Common Story

Overall the story was interesting to listen to while doing other things tuning into it when something interesting happened. I just feel like it's a generic story but that's mostly because basically only one type of person ever makes a memoir. The one thing I definitely didn't like though was the random [audience laughs] and things like that really took me out of the story whenever it came up. And as a last note I liked the narrator.
