Publisher's Summary

The gripping story of an extraordinary American hero, the most decorated man in US Marine Corps history, from a New York Times best-selling author.

In the glorious chronicles of the US Marine Corps, no name is more revered than that of Lt. Gen. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller. The only fighting man to receive the Navy Cross five separate times - a military honor second only to the Congressional Medal of Honor - he was the epitome of a professional warrior. A son of the South, descendant of Robert E. Lee, and cousin to George S. Patton, Puller began his enlisted career during World War I and moved up through the ranks as he proved his battlefield mettle in Haiti and Nicaragua, with the Horse Marines in Peking, in the Pacific Theater of World War II, and in the nightmarish winter engagements of the Korean War.

Fearless and seemingly indestructible, adored by the troops he championed yet forced into early retirement by a high command that resented his "lowly" beginnings and unwillingness to play politics, Puller remains one of most towering figures in American military history. Bestselling military biographer Burke Davis paints the definitive portrait of this extraordinary marine hero.

Once a Marine Always a Marine

I thought the book was as I heard of General Puller in the Corps I did notice a few mention of drill sergeant - Marines don’t have drill sergeants

Overall very inspiring as does show that in the Corps the real guys who get it down are the enlisted, really appreciated how Chesty always took care of his men! Something I learned as a NCO at a young age also

Unbelievable tales of a badass marine

You'd think it's a fiction book with the amount of action that is described. One hell of a man, and one hell of a story. The voice reading it was a perfect gravely voice, as if it was read by a drill instructor.
I can recommend this book whole heartedly.

The Kind of Man we need today.

Any military history buff knows the battle tales of this good man, but all will come to recognize the man and the human being this person truly was given the excellent interwoven personal testimonials of friends, loved ones and fellow military men placed throughout the story. A very enjoyable listen with true value added beyond military history.

An Amazing Story of a Unique Marine

This was one of the most interesting books I’ve read (listened to), in decades.

Whether or not you care to read or listen to books on war or military matters, this book reaches far beyond its subject matter by laying out the life and career of a man who has few equals in his chosen profession. Enlisting as a Private Puller rose through the ranks due to his incredible skill, dedication to his men (first w his fellow Privates, then later as an officer to the rank of Lt. Gen- 3 star), he rose due to his skill in battle, & not as a brown nose, paper pusher who rises through political maneuvering & back stabbing better men than himself (which is all too common during peace time).

In fact, unique may not be an adequate word to describe Puller. In some of the most desperate fighting in USMC history Puller was successful in every situation he & his men found themselves in. Astonishing actually, when you listen to, or read, about Puller’s accomplishments.

I think the best that can be said comes from the books description on Amazon:
“Fearless and seemingly indestructible, adored by the troops he championed yet forced into early retirement by a high command that resented his "lowly" beginnings and unwillingness to play politics, Puller remains one of most towering figures in American military history.”

Gen. Puller’s incredible success in the toughest situations in war, his dedication to his men, & refusing to play politics is, to me, the highest Honor history could place on any individual who devoted his life to the service & protection of his country.

Still a legend in the Corps

Must-read for motivators and disgruntled lance coolies. Shows what the Corps is and where it lost its way. Never forget that in the end, even Chesty got the Green Weenie. We all hope for a leader like Chesty. Goodnight Chesty, wherever you are. Semper Fi
