Read Eugene’s story in the 80s watched him in The Pacific and now his so sons story. I feel so close to Eugene now. Almost like family. A wonderful gift to be so close to a combat veteran of The War. Thanks Henry for sharing your father.
Again my only complaint is why do the narrators of World War Two audiobooks always mispronounce so many things, persons, places that are so intrinsic to the time and events. BAR is a Browning automatic rifle and always referred to as B A R pronounced phonetically. Not BAR. For the most part this narrator is on point with most esoteric names. He did call Bougainville Bouganviila. He got Tarawa right and all of the local Okinawan places correct. Plus Peleliu was pronounced correctly. Several other books on the Pacific war had the narrator mispronouncing these hallowed battles. Really destroys the narration for me.
This book is a must read for anyone who read the original years ago.

Good stuff many passages that didn't make the book

Wonderful and compelling accompaniment to the original with added passages that didn't make it into With the Old Breed. And a full thoughtful personalized narration from his Sons perspective. I enjoyed it.

Well told remembrance of Sledgehammer

He was quite a man and we are blessed to have his story, It's really one of the best books ever written, and this addition is very well done...

henry sledge brought the saga of his father's fine work to a teary end. hearing the last of everything that wasn't published was a great listening pleasure

personal memories supplement the detailed narrative of the King Company USMC in Pelileiu and Okinawa. My Dad served with his, and this rekindled many memories. Please listen and learn.

Excellent addition to a wonderful story

Eugene Sledge’s son did a great job expanding on his father’s masterpiece by sharing untold stories found in his father’s unpublished notes.
By also providing additional historical information he made an already excellent book even more powerful.
A great read. A must read for people interested in the Pacific theater of that awful conflict.
