Publisher's Summary

A frothy, romantic adventure with a hint of old New York glamour and a dash of magic.

Jilted at the altar, small-town librarian Claire is forced to go on her romantic honeymoon in New York City alone. After enduring one too many meals for two as one, Claire invites a seemingly harmless little old lady to join her for afternoon tea at the Plaza. Unbeknownst to Claire, said little old lady is actually a grand wizard, who bestows Claire with a magical amulet that makes her the sitting queen of the magical community. Claire is swept into the gilded world of New York City wizards - and a bitter power struggle for the throne. With the help of a cursed former prince, Claire must untangle this web of deception and find the magical community’s rightful leader before her "honeymoon" is over.

The heroine wins this one on her own

There’s a lot of reasons why Make Mine Magic felt like it was created just for me. Magic, for one, is a part of this story, which is my jam. I also love peeking into the glamorous lives of the New York City upper class. Our heroine, much like myself, was a book-loving outsider in this world of upper-class wizards. But what I loved most about this story was Claire’s unflinching strength, independence, and cleverness in the face of a situation that seemed completely out of her depth. It was easy to root for Claire as she navigates the cloudy politics of the wizarding community of NYC with her Texan-style aplomb and her strong moral compass. She even uses her research skills as a librarian to outsmart the bad guys at their own game. How badass is that?! Go Claire! And let’s not forget the romance here. I promise you, there is a dreamy, moody guy who is wrapped up in all this, but you’ll have to listen to find out because I’m not giving it away! —Melissa B., Audible Editor

Editor's Pick

When your superpower is research
"I absolutely adored this charming story about a suburban librarian named Claire who, despite being jilted at the altar, decides to use her honeymoon trip to explore a big city famous for its arts culture, historic sites...and undercover magical community (!). Claire, whose Texas-tinged voice is narrated wonderfully by Karissa Vacker, gets tangled up with wizards who take her on an unintentional journey of intrigue, self-discovery, and potential romance. She learns first-hand how power—including supernatural powers—can corrupt, but when used wisely can also restore one’s confidence and ability to help the commonwealth. The many nods to book lovers was a bonus. If you're craving a feel-good listen for the new year, this is it."—Valerie B., Audible Editor

Clean read

Nice to be able to listen to a book without being verbally assaulted by cuss words!
Character accents were believable and not overdone. Enjoy a good story performed well.

Loved this!

What a great story. Our heroine Is in NY on her honeymoon, sans groom. When she encounters a elderly blind woman who has fallen, little does she know that saving her will lead to magic, mayhem and maybe even a little romance. Highly recommend all books by this author and this story doesn’t disappoint.

So magically sweet

I've been craving a good paranormal book and this hit the spot. This has a cozy mystery feel, that focuses on the romance as an after thought and not the center point. I love the historical references, the characters, the plot. This book had everything I wanted and a few things I didn't even know I needed.

Nice change of pace

I love a good romance as much as the next person. But lately all the top romance escape books are just over the top raunchy. This book was a breath of fresh air. I couldn’t stop listening. Highly recommend.

Cringe

DNF. This is the female MC that stars in old horror movies who Always. Goes. In. The. Basement. And her rationalized motives are so weak that she could also be a 70’s sitcom female actor who makes the idiotic decisions to create drama. She needs an. SSDGM intervention. And I need to listen to something I am not wincing every time this not-2019 woman ignores her instincts.

Make Mine Magic

This was like any other kind of magic book I have listened to it was interesting I will give you that.

The mystery really had me intrigued. Claire is one smart cookie and I felt terrible for what happened to her until she finds herself in this pickle. But her wit and smarts really shined.

It was all very nice, I don’t know what I was expecting exactly it was a good story if a little dull.

The narration was pretty great.

Mindless...

This book is a well developed outline, but not a novel. With a little effort, It could have been much more interesting and fleshed out.
Still, a decent listen while doing chores....

a fun listen

this story was a fun, strong women lead story I really appreciated that they didn't focus too much on the romance until towards the end and it was more about this woman finding out about magic and coming into her own and gaining confidence. however the plot was maybe a little bit too predictable the only reason for one star to be deducted. the narrator was great twangy southern voice wasn't too much and I can really appreciate the simplicity of the story.

I hope this is just the start, I want more

I loved this, a librarian as the heroine perfect!

When odd things start happening on your non honeymoon and you find your life is changing, you can panic or go with the flow. Is it really magic? You want to understand stuff, to know what's happening, just research it. That's exactly what Claire did, she used her skills and found life was so much more special than she ever thought..

Entertaining enough

Not my favourite by Shanna Swendson, but fun enough. As an audiobook repetitive phrasing was particularly noticeable,
