In 1942, telegrams always bring life-altering and tragic news in a war-hardened world - and the one Maggie Marshall receives is no different. But running a restaurant with the help of only pregnant, unwed girls has taught her to be tough. Maggie's no weeping widow, but Charlotte Penfield thinks she's the most unfeeling woman on earth. Seventeen, exiled by her wealthy parents, and working in the restaurant, fanciful Charlotte runs away with romantic notions of a reunion with her baby's father at his military camp.

It has been years since Maggie darkened the church door of her pastor and childhood friend, Reverend Reuben Fennel, and his heart breaks for the hardened woman Maggie's become. When she seeks his help to find Charlotte, he's happy to aid her in the chase - though it may cost him his job and reputation.

Over the miles from Winnipeg to Fort William, Reuben and Maggie's journey rekindles their affection - and their dreams of what they still could be. But Maggie stubbornly clings to her independent ways until she's dealt another devastating loss, one that forces her to recognize that heroes can be discovered in unlikely places and love may be far sweeter than she ever dared imagine.

A Good One

I feel like this book was slow in starting, but once I got a chapter or two in I was hooked! I loved the history and the point of the story.

good book!

A story of pain and mistakes and redemption woven in WWII Canada. I enjoyed this book but not the narrator so much. He was pedantic and slow. I'm glad I sped him up a notch - otherwise I'd have missed a good book. He's not a deal breaker, but it would be so much better with a good narrator. It's worth reading or listening!

Good story of real pain and real love

I love how the author weaves together characters from the previous story while creating a whole New world, a story about all new characters. This is a rich story. What's next? Also the audio on both books is wonderful.

Excellent read

I loved this book and this author! Second book and headed on to more. The only thing I dislike is how audible does not recommend this author again after I’m finished with her books. Why is that? Is it because it’s Christian fiction? Whenever I finish with any authors book, I get recommendations on the next one. Not in this genre. Shame on Audible. After two of her books that cannot be a coincidence.

This was outstanding!!

This was a very entertaining story. I love the era and it was nice to be able to listen while driving or cooking dinner. I love how I felt spiritually fed as well. I will be looking for more by this author and the narrator was great!
