One young man's journey to master the art of magic...

Jack wants nothing more than to be a mage. He trains by himself every day, cultivating mana and focusing on building his internal magic. All with the hope of one day joining a mage guild. Except one day, Jack encounters a strange object in the forest. It is the heart of a dungeon. Somehow, he absorbs the dungeon's heart into his body. Before he knows what to do, he encounters a peculiar man by the name of Lachlan Woe. He is a mage of great power, he says, and he is in need of an apprentice.

So, Jack ventures to the Shadow Tower, which Lachlan Woe calls his home. There, Jack will begin his studies and train to become a mage.

It soon becomes clear that Jack's powers are not those of regular mages. After absorbing the dungeon heart, his potential seems boundless, and even his mysterious mentor is in awe. Even so, Jack must work hard to learn exactly what his limits are, if there are indeed any limits at all to his magic.

All the while, Jack will explore the Shadow Tower, meet its bizarre inhabitants, and discover the secret origin of the tower and its master.

Join Jack as he embarks on the Path of the Mage and digs deeper into the mystery of Lachlan Woe and the Shadow Tower.

so the story itself is pretty good The premise is really well built And it sets itself up quite nicely.... but the execution is a little rough... what I mean by that is any interaction you see the main character takes after he basically gets his power and gets to the tower with his master basically it feels like nails on a chalkboard I'll try to give a good example..... basically a day later a new student shows up to learn from his master as he leaves the tower because he hears the commotion It goes through this entire long explanation about sights sounds and what things look like in the garden before we even get to what's going on in the front of the tower And this isn't the only time Right when you feel like you want the answer to your question or when they're about to explain something something randomly happens to where it distracts the main character or distracts other people or you simply just get this long explanation about other things that have nothing to do with the substance... I feel like the writer has to have more experience with setting the mood when you're about to explain something really important only for the main character to ponder on the taste of the coffee going down his throat.. It takes away from the tension and it just makes you feel frustrated.... And yes this really happens in the book....

I mean honestly this story feels like it has a ADHD sometimes MC wants to tell his master about the entire lizard familiar experience has multiple times just chooses not to for what amounts to no good reason... Even when training is specifically focused on him he just ignores and doesn't even bring it up even though the story says he wants to say it... it's like say it I'm so tired of this story just beating around the bush I will be grudgingly say when it finally gets to the point of him explaining his power... It feels satisfying but man does it feel like you're climbing up a sheer wall with nothing to help you sometimes

another example of this ADHD style character is unfortunately his inability to focus on any given task he literally forgets his train of thought instantly... also seemingly thinking that it's normal for time just to pass so quickly even though very little relative time passes speaking on time I don't like how the writer forgets how much time passes in between each day on what amounts to like the 6th or 7th day of their training Jack muses about how he gets that hunger feeling that he's supposedly had for The last few weeks he says problem is it's only the 6th or 7th day since he got his power we know this is the case because on morning of the second day we get introduced to the second student character The next day she learns how to use her power she goes overboard and becomes tired for basically 2 or 3days following that their first day back on training is when we get that comment.... it's just a shame when a writer loses track of the timing....

I didn't like the entire Melinda finds out by Total accident because Lachlan decides to be a total idiot and practice his magic and literal middle of an open field...... and Jack couldn't wake up because he was somehow connected to the tower It just felt like it could have been done better
it's such a really lame way for an awesome character to overreact... they kept the truth from her because they knew she was going overreact... I just honestly dislike it and it gets a point off because of how badly she overreacts

I think I know why people dislike the story

I tried to like this book. But the story and narrative seemed like they were written for a 10 year old.

Age appropriate for 10 yr olds

In my opinion, this is an excellent way to start a series. Now I do agree with some of the other reviews on audible that the story may be slow, bland and boring but it's an introduction to the series. So everything they did in this book will result in a better story for future books to come so we can all skip the fillers in the next books. So I have to applaud the author for taking the time to do it. Also, the first couple of chapters were a little sluggish but after that it really picked up. This series has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing what's improved in the next book. As always, the author and narrator did a fantastic job with this book. So kudos to the both of them. 4.5/5 stars

I'm half way through. It hasn't been 'bad' but it hasn't been very memorable either.

Sometimes I just time out what they are saying, even when I rewind it's never anything of substance. If I actually hated this book I would just give up on it, so there's that. Here's a rundown of everything so far.

SPOILER:

Guy wants to be a mage.
Is told he can't for reasons.
Finds a magical McGuffin that fixed the problem.
He is now the chosen one.
Magical skills now come to him easily.
Everyone is Uber impressed.
He accidently made some sort of soul bond with a lizard in the floor boards.
Evaporated said lizard.
Then reforged the lizard into some sort of magically soul salamander.
Also he's starting to get mana vampire urges.

So far, it's been pretty generic
