Publisher's Summary

Two girls go missing. Only one will return.

The couple that offers the highest amount will see their daughter again. The losing couple will not. Make no mistake. One child will die....

When nine-year-old best friends Charlie and Amy disappear, two families are plunged into a living nightmare. A text message confirms the unthinkable; that the girls are the victims of a terrifying kidnapping.

And when a second text message pits the two families against each other for the life of their children, the clock starts ticking for D.I. Kim Stone and the squad.

Seemingly outwitted at every turn, as they uncover a trail of bodies, Stone realizes that these ruthless killers might be the most deadly she has ever faced, and that their chances of bringing the girls home alive are getting smaller by the hour....

Untangling a dark web of secrets from the families' past might hold the key to solving this case. But can Kim stay alive long enough to do so? Or, will someone's child pay the ultimate price?

The latest utterly addictive thriller from the number-one best seller Angela Marsons.

Best DI Kim Stone book so far

Everything about this book was fantastic.
The suspense was gripping, characters relatable, and style is wonderful.

This book has been the most graphic of the series so far, some parts a bit disturbing, but perfect for the development of the story.

If you a crime suspense junky, you shouldn't miss this one

just okay

I read the reviews and wanted to like this but I just couldn't get interested enough to enjoy it. I kept finding myself rewinding back several times because I couldn't remember what I just heard . I can't pinpoint it but it just didn't grab me , didn't make me want to know more. I did finish it but it was difficult.

Even better than its 4.5 star average rating!

British author Angels Marsons knows how to build suspense! This is novel #3 in the DI Kim Stone crime thriller series. Like the first 2 it earns a 5 star rating. The cases are about kidnappings of 9 year old girls. If you like crime thrillers, they do not get better than this series. English actress Jan Cramer narrates as she does with the outstanding Detective Erica Foster series by author Robert Bryndza. With fewer than 50 novels to her credit Jan Cramer is quickly becoming one of the best narrators. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Love this series and this book does NOT disappoint!!

Such a good clever book. Harder content as it hits close to home with subject matter fears - and found myself bawling at times, especially at the end. However, totally love this book and as alway Jan Cramer you do a fantastic job!!

Didn't Finish

The story line was decent, but there was something about either the writing or the narrating that caused me to not be able to pay enough attention. It was one of those books that didn't grip me, and I found myself constantly needing to back up 30 or 60 seconds, or sometimes to the beginning of the chapter. After trudging through like this until maybe two-thirds of the way through, I finally decided that it wasn't worth it to continue this way and finish the book. It's kind of a shame, because I wanted to know how it ended. However, the book wasn't compelling enough for it to matter all that much. Oh well--off to a new title...

One of the BEST Detective Series

Love the characters, the twists and turns and the gripping edge of chair suspense. This one is the best I have read in the series to date. The narrator is fantastic and brings all the characters alive. Can't wait to read the next.

Unlikeable character, story dragged on forever

The main character, Detective Kim stone, was rude, short tempered, unfriendly, and always had a chip on her shoulder. I didn’t find her to be interesting, pleasant, or particularly smart. She had a difficult childhood (in foster care) but it just seemed to make her a very unpleasant and unsympathetic character. This was exaggerated because the narrator always read her character as speaking in a fast, angry tone; never in a normal tone of voice. I made the book really difficult to listen to. It seemed the whole book was done in an angry shouting tone of voice. There was no brilliant detective work, no interesting procedural activity. I wanted to find out how the crime was resolved, but it dragged on forever. There was a lot of doing nothing interesting and then as events finally played out it reached a conclusion – not based on anything the detectives really did. Then at the end the whole crime is explained including how the criminals knew each other, how the crime was planned, etc. Again this wasn’t based on any intelligent work done by the detectives, it was just all laid out at the end, finally. It irritated me that Det Stone really resented having a profiler and negotiator assigned to work with her team. There was no real explanation why – because she personally didn’t value their work or believe in their professions? Or she was just arrogant and wanted to do it herself? The reader is just left to accept her attitude and perhaps we’re supposed to agree with her? I didn’t agree and found her attitude to be unprofessional and unhelpful. She was rude to these professionals who ultimately did contribute to the team, but she never acknowledges that. I just found her to be very unlikeable and am not sure why anyone put up with her! There seemed to be a lot of gratuitous violence and sadism in the descriptions of the crimes and when the kidnappers interacted with the victims. I just fast forwarded over this. It didn’t add to the story line and didn’t move the plot along. I want the story to be interesting but there’s no reason to just make it sick and depraved for no reason. I just skipped it in order to get through the book. Overall it took me days and days to finish this book. That’s a sign for me that I wasn’t engaged and finishing it was a chore. After I finished this one I listened one by a different author in a day and a half and it was really good. It had an Interesting, multifaceted detective who was a good leader, polite, respectful, and self-effacing; smart detective work; and an intelligent plot. I’ll get another one by that author and will give Angela Marston and Det Kim Stone a pass. Good riddance!

Narration much better - story outstanding

I have now listened to all 3 books of this series, all narrated by Jan Cramer. After the first book I was critical of the narration but I'm really glad I persevered. As ever, the story was fast paced and gripping, but the narration this time was superb. If you are hesitating over this audiobook due to doubts about the narrator, then go for it - you won't be disappointed.

Gripping!

A truly gripping tale, fast paced, gruesome in parts, full of twists and turns. It depicts humanity at its worst and at its best. The characters were gritty shaped by childhood experiences. It's about the power of love, how important it is and the devastation to the human soul when there is none present. Highly recommended.

Excellent

This was an excellent story, really gripping from start to finish. Can't wait to read the next Kim Stone instalment. I've ready one previously however this is definitely my favourite. Thought I'd guessed the bad guy but I was wrong, excellent writing and great delivery.

Fast paced, tense and exciting!

I have really enjoyed the first three Kim Stone books. I couldn't stop listening until I knew what would happen to the girls! Very likable characters and well written. Like the other two books I found it quite far fetched and had a few plot holes, but still entertaining and enjoyable to read. I hope the autor is planning on more in the Kim Stone series but please for the love of god fire the narrator!

Story good but the characters not the best

The detective seemed pretty clueless, overly self assured and with a very flat sense of humour. The story itself was clever, although the characters of the evil characters were not well drawn out.

Absolutely brilliant

Someone else mentioned that they didn't rate the narrator in the first book, but thought she was brilliant in this one - I could not agree more, she was excellent.

The story line was the best one yet. In fact I would go as far as to say this is the best detective book I have read to date (and I have read a lot! Highly recommend, I do think it is best to read the books in order, although you can read them all individually.

This book had me on the edge of my seat, and would make a brilliant TV series.
