A dead man walks into a police station. He tells a tale - bizarre as it is grotesque - of kidnap and organ harvesting. John Baden's story of being held prisoner for 12 years sounds far-fetched - but it's all about to get much, much stranger. DI Ben Westphall has been given the case because of his background in MI6. He also has a knack for getting inside people's heads and seeing things others would miss. Westphall is no ordinary detective, and this is no ordinary case.

Publisher's Summary
A victim? Or a killer?
One icy cold morning, the remains of a woman are discovered. She has been abused, then butchered. DI Kelly Porter knows this is the work of a monster. One who has killed before - and will do so again.
Kevin Flint is a young man with no friends and a reputation for being odd. He explores the hidden corners of the Lake District and likes to creep and watch. He witnesses depravity, and it excites him. But will he cross the line from bystander to perpetrator?
Despite her personal life taking unexpected turns, Kelly’s detective instincts tell her that the answers lie with Kevin - if only she knew the right questions to ask. Will Kelly miss her chance and have blood on her hands? And will she ever be the same when it’s over?
A stunning new DI Kelly Porter crime novel that is perfect for fans of Patricia Gibney, L. J. Ross, and Angela Marsons.

Meh
I like this series but this book has a lot of filler content. For example, near the end, the reader spends minute by minute steps with a character who is literally putting on a tie, driving his car, walking up the stairs, knocking on the door. The book is filled with that kind of writing. Overall, I can’t recommend it.

Great story, let down like all the other titles by poor recording. Narration is great but the quality is poor, especially considering how easy it is these days. Over distorted especially in the lower registers, Inexcusable with today’s technology’and spoils a good story and narration. Jeff Bezos, sort it out!!!!!

Great New Edition to Kelly Porter Series
The narration on the story was perfect. The characters had great new dimension and the setting was, as always, breathtaking. tThe one thing I would suggest is better editing to reduce the length. I found my mind drifting in spots when Lynch became repetitive or predictable. The story would move better with a bit less unnecessary detail.

Would make any Scot cringe
The story as usual was very good. I have listened to and liked them all. This one unfortunately was ruined by the most awful attempt at a Scottish accent I’ve ever had the displeasure to hear. For future reference Scottish people really do speak normally. They pronounce all the letters in every word! Honestly we do! Clare Kissane do some real research and listen to some lovely Scottish speakers. That was an embarrassment to every Scottish listener.

Disappointing, gratuitously gruesome.
I have read all previous books in this series. This one was an immediate ‘ lost cause’ from the beginning and taking up to Chapter 17 to get really started. Then it was downhill all the way with an unhealthy and disturbing character, unbelievable references to disability and homophobia. The main sad criticism was the portrayal of women as mean, callous, deleterious and deserving of caged violence, setting the super advancement of women to date back two centuries. I couldn’t finish the book and will not be reading any more of this author.

Extremely Disappointing
I have read all the other books in this series and found them very enjoyable. The development of Kelly Porter and her team, as well as her personal relationships has been really strong, but it sadly all came to an end with this book.
This story is incredibly show to get going and there's absolutely no tension present. The Chinese connection seems contrived and completely unbelievable.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the less said about the narrators attempt at a Scottish accent the better but the rest of the narration was poor as well, It sounded like even she was bored by the story and the result was very robotic reading.
Such a shame because this series has been great thus far. I expect I'll give the next book a try in the hope that things get back on track, but Clare Kissane is going to have to do some homework on her Scottish accents if the Scottish character is going to return.
I didn't finish this book which is very unusual for me but it became clear is just wasn't going to get any better. A real shame.

I’m not sure what went wrong with this book. Right from the start you’d question who wrote it. It’s nothing like the previous books, and seems like it’s written by a year 10 school child. Put that with uninspiring narration and it’s utterly boring.

Totally agree with Sandra! The story dragged and was not believable. Worse, the narration, of some characters, was grating, to the point of almost not wanting to carry on. This promising series has taken an extreme nose-dive and, I fear, is about to descend into “nappy-valley”! I will not be so quick to get the next in this series, if there is to be one.

What happened to this series? This book dragged on and on with too much of what was really not needed, and the narration did not help. I think this is the last of this series I will bother with. Lost Cause really is a fitting title for this book.
