Great horror story

This was a very creatively written novel. A bit slow at the beginning. The characters, although novel to horror, are a type that actually existed in the Western territories of late 19 th century America. The stories of Blk homesteaders and farmers, and especially Blk women who helped populate and build the West are hardly ever told. Also the role of the Chinese in opening the West is often ignored. Not that this a tedious and didactic story; it was so much fun to read! A very inventive and original novel!

Not my cup of tea

I was kind of surprised about this story, not into monsters and demons. It was a little different to each his own some might enjoy it. I wouldn’t recommend it.

A bit strange

The story was so far fetched and gruesome at times. I’m still trying to decide what I got from it.

Superb story

Excellent book, very readable. I would recommend this to any lover of dark fiction, particularly if they were fond of historical fiction.

Odd combination of genres

The narration and storytelling were superb. The suspense leading up to the revelation of the contents of the trunk was superb. However, I found the story a strange combination of historical fiction and sci-fi. It seemed bizarre and a bit outlandish. Not really my cup of tea overall. The author definitely has great talent, but not a fan of the genre.

great narrator

Narrator was perfection. Really interesting story unlike anything Ive ever read. Not for everyone, though.

Compelling story & narration

As always, Joniece is an awesome narrator! This is my first Victor LaValle audiobook. The story is different and unique. I will definitely check out other books by the author.

I didn’t research the his book very much before diving in. The narrator was perfect for this book and so easy to listen to! I was surprised multiple times during this book.

Murder, mythical creatures, and family bonds…I loved it!
