Acerca de esta escucha

The year is 1889.

Set in a small Louisiana parish, deep in the segregated South, Rootwork follows school-age sisters, Betty, Ann, and Pee Wee during one life-changing summer when the three of them head off to stay with their hoodoo-practicing aunt, Theodora, a powerful woman feared by the local townspeople. She teaches the girls the secrets of her craft, like how to make "hot foot powder" and how to whip up some "goofer dust" to get back at an enemy. The girls delight in their harmless hoodoo adventures until a tragic event involving the town's racist sheriff promises to change their lives forever.

A story of love and redemption, Rootwork explores the strength of family and the darker side of the heart.

This was the first book of historical fiction that I have read in many years and was a good introduction back into the genre. The story was character driven with an “old school YA” feel (1970s, 1980s). Hoodoo magic guided the plot without detracting from the focus on coming of age and family dynamics during the 19th century southern Reconstruction Era.
Of the three main characters, sisters, the youngest PeeWee dominated the book with her headstrong attitude, mystical aptitude, and wisdom and ambition beyond her years.
The ending was not exactly anti-climactic, but it certainly left me wanting to find out what came next, the eventual fate and hopefully, the safety and reunion of the characters.
