Publisher's summary

Grace Hardwick's dad is a science fiction writer who makes his living destroying the world. When Grace decides to go away for her first year of college her dad, Robert, can't help but think of all of the potential ways that society could collapse and strand his daughter hundreds of miles from home. Then, near the end of her freshman year, it happens. Like a scene from one of Robert's books, coordinated terror attacks take place at dozens of locations around the country - including on the campus of Grace's university.

Grace and her father barely have time for a single rushed phone call before they lose signal. In that call, Robert reminds his daughter of the key he gave her when she left for school - the key that she constantly wears around her neck. She doesn't know what it opens. She doesn't know where the engraved numbers will lead her. All she knows is that her dad is not the type to let her go hundreds of miles from home with no backup plan.

With her roommate in tow, Grace embarks on a treacherous journey that may lead her home or may lead her right into the path of another stranded traveler - a disturbed gamer who sees nothing but opportunity in a world that now closely resembles that of his favorite video games.

THE WORLD HAS BECOME GRAND THEFT AUTO

THEY WOULD NOT KILL THOUSANDS IN THE ATTACKS, THEY WOULD KILL MILLIONS AS A RESULT OF THE ATTACKS
All of Horton's books are entertaining. This book like all his books, starts right off with the action. I have been known to say in my reviews that I am not a chase scene, blowing things up type of lover, but Horton writes in a way that gets your adrenaline flowing. I specifically remember one scene in particular in which I found myself yelling at the radio, MOVE, STEP ON THE GAS, HURRY, GET OUT OF THERE. When it comes to action scenes, I have never come upon a writer who can put the reader in the scene as well as Horton does. Although you might not want to be in the scene, because of how terrifying it is. Horton's books are scarier than Zombie books (of which I am a big fan) cause they are so probable. IF TIMES ARE HARD YOU GOT TO BE HARDER.

I DON'T WANT YOU TO THINK I AM A CONSPIRACY NUT, BUT
I have to be honest, my politics are not the same as Horton's. That does not mean I can't respect and enjoy his writings. I also believe that his writings should be taken serious for the possibilities, that could very well happen, which he greatly illustrates. If I was president, he would be on my staff. As a Christian, I have trouble turning my back on a whole group of people like the Syrian Refugees, but also see the danger they could bring to our country. As far as preppers go this book is a little extreme. A college girl who has been carrying around a military tourniquet since grade school?

DON'T LET YOUR MOUTH WRITE CHECKS, YOUR ASS CAN'T CASH
In a lot of my reviews, I like to mention that I would like to see the story through the eyes of the bad guys as well as the good guys. Horton does that. The story starts out with us seeing through the eyes and minds of some of those involved in the terrorist acts. Later, one of the main characters is a guy named, Gamma Ray. He is a selfish gamer, who thinks the world is a game similar to Grand Theft Auto and he is the king.

KEVIN PIERCE
Horton's books would sell well without Pierce, but Pierce's narration has got to double or triple his audio sales. If I am trying to decide between two post apocalyptic books to spend my credit on and one his narrated by Pierce and the other is not, than it is not even a choice, it will be Pierce every time.

Well written, very real, and right now.

What made the experience of listening to Locker Nine the most enjoyable?

It has to be a combination of two things. A well written story line, and a narrator whose voice and pacing are so well matched to the authors work.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Pierce’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Kevin never fails to deliver, and once again he places us right there IN the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No laughter, no crying, but I had to stop listening for a few days. I began to listen to this audiobook a day before the National Weather Service decided a major hurricane was going to make a pass at the East Coast of the United States. I was well into the book as I shifted my focus from standard household chores to making preparations for what was forecast to be a Category 4 Hurricane quite possibly blowing right through my neighborhood. With the audiobook in my ears I was out driving from store to store collecting the things I knew I was going to need to survive the storm, and Kevin Pierce was reminding me of things I might have forgotten. It was surreal. Making my way through a giant warehouse store along with hundreds of obviously worried people all moving in a controlled panic was more than a little unsettling. I was preparing for a real life disaster.... but, I was in a Franklin Horton Novel, with Kevin Pierce as my guide at the same time. The story is present day. The characters are so well fleshed out and real, and Kevin's voice puts us right there in the story. It all became just a little too much.... and I had to stop listening for a few days. When the real life danger was past, and I turned my attention to cleaning up the damage, I returned to listening... And the novel was a welcome diversion from the task at hand.

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.

Awesome

Grace Hardwick's college life has changed when her school and other parts of the US are attacked. She gets a call through to her dad, Robert, who writes books about the apocalypse and prepping, he reminds her to use the key he gave her, Grace is confused but he just says use the key before being cut off. Once she follows the coordinates on the key and finds a fully stocked storage locker, locker number nine, of everything she will need to get home. This is the story of that trek home.

This is a exciting, action packed, suspense filled book. I really enjoyed it and think it would be really cool to have a dad like Grace's. You also get some glimpses into Grace's childhood which is really insightful and awesome. I had the audio version narrated by Kevin Pierce who did such a awesome job on this book I can't wait for more. Mr. Pierce really ahs a way with bringing these characters to life and giving you someone to root for in these tough times.

Awful, simplistic and boring

I liked the premise, the narrator was fine, but the book is just awful and boring.

There's no character or plot development at all.

There's very little action, which would be ok if there were any intellectual stimulation, but there isn't.

Quick summary, "preppers were all correct and they're all good people. Everyone else is crazy and stupid. Watch two weak girls stumble around until the boring end."

Don't stop Now!

I think Franklin Horton is one of the best modern story tellers. his pace and development is right on. I throughly enjoy the universe he has created.

the borrowed world was told in 3 books. I think, locker nine has more story to tell. I hope he keeps going with Grace's story.

thanks Franklin for this great story.

I found it boring.

It was a basic story, with no real excitement. It wasn't as good as the summary made it out to be.

Great story and action

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! I didn't want to stop listening.

Any additional comments?

Interesting take on SHTF. I always enjoy his book and am listening to The Borrowed World again. Waiting for book 4 on that series, it's awesome!

Hopefully the power never goes out for 2 days.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, unrealistic characters and character behavior.

Any additional comments?

Apparently on the same day that an attack happens somewhere in the country: Highways will be closed to the public, police will cease to be effective across the entire nation, random people will set up ambushes and road blocks, FEMA will somehow mobilize massive camps for stranded people. Day 2 : Wholesale random murder, complete absence of any law enforcement anywhere.

If this seems realistic or probable to you : This would be a great read for you. Also you probably weren't alive when 9/11 happened.

Interesting premise for parental contemplation

Are your children prepared to deal with a disaster? Do they have the life skills to exist without the usual protections and conventions of society?

This explores the concept of such training and preparations following two young women as they attempt to get home after a crippling event hits their area.

Not bad!

If you're looking for a realistic doomsday book, this one should please you! I could have done without the POV from the terrorist group. They could have used that time to develop more stories. One of the main characters is Grace, a college student, and the other is Ray, a gamer. You get the POV of a heroin and a villain. It's kind of nice and refreshing. I wish there had been a female narrator, but once you got past it, his voice was okay. All in all, it was pretty decent!
