Darrow returns as Pierce Brown’s New York Times bestselling Red Rising series continues in the thrilling sequel to Dark Age.

“The measure of a man is not the fear he sows in his enemies. It is the hope he gives his friends.”—Virginia au Augustus

The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains.

But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend.

The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

This is a satisfying Conclusion to the previous five novels. I did find some tonal inconsistencies between this book and the previous two. This book felt more tonally similar to the original three Red Rising stories, which I didn't count as bad per se but it was confusing going from the darker, more serious two novels to this.

I do not understand the decision not to bring back the ensemble narrators of the previous two books.

Tim G Reynolds is an excellent narrator, no doubt. If I rated the performance strictly on his talent it would be a 5. One of the best.

The problem is given that the other ensemble narrators were almost all very good, those characters voices are cemented in my perception, and so hearing Lysander and Virginia in Tim's voice and not their previous narrators was difficult for me.

It didn't really ruin from my overall enjoyment of the plot, but it did detract from the overall experience which was a bit of a let down.

The TLDR of it is: if you liked the last five books you should buy this one and you'll like it. There are some blemishes and imperfections and some choices I don't agree with, but overall, great ride.

Satisfying Conclusion but Narration Lacking

A good story but way too long. A series too long. Finally back to just Tim Gerard Reynolds is great though. Of course he did an outstanding job.

Too Long

Like others infatuated with this series, I too had been waiting for this book and dreading it at the same time.

This was a good book for the series and I found myself remembering the beginning of it all at the institute in book one. Brown masterfully crafted this nostalgia by going back to the roots of how it all began - friendship, alliances, and raw emotion.

I think he needed to write this book, but I found it very hard to get thru. I'm tired of the war. I'm tired of reading the same thing over and over again. Brutality, eye for an eye mentality, and more pick a side tactics.

This book gave a good direction of where the conclusion will go, but I felt like we could've gotten there sooner. I listened to the audio book and found myself just putting it on for background noise to get thru the story. The big revelations came towards the end.

I'm sure I'll finish the series to know how it concludes, but I wasn't left waiting for it after finishing this one.

Good book, but the voice acting was great. I’m glad they stick with the same person for the whole thing.

Good book, great voice acting
