Publisher's summary

Legends of Ogre Gate is the story of Sunan and Bao. He comes from a fishing village, she is from a noble family in the capital city. The invasion of the Demon Emperor throws the lands into chaos, and brings Qi into the world, allowing for superhuman martial arts to develop. In many stories, the main characters discover ancient fighting methods, but in Legends of Ogre Gate, Sunan and Bao are the ones who invent martial arts cultivation. The story starts with both of them in their teens, and ends with them as adults with children of their own. It's an epic wuxia adventure filled with quasi-mythological elements, a teeny splash of romance, and a bit of humor mixed into the action.

Unacceptable

This is what happens when a Author thinks it's acceptable to put his or her audio book on Audible with this level of terrible audio quality. No mic condenser, no proper sound booth ( yes you can hear back ground noise ) and a narrator that is reading his/her book like a dictionary with ZERO inflections, I don't think the narrator has EVER heard other narrations done for action books. This should be pulled from Audible and totally redo the audio.

Surprisingly Good!!!

This book was really well written. Mr. Bai has a bright future, I shouldn't be surprised tho, from what I remember he did an amazing job imbuing life into those translations. You could tell that he had a really strong appreciation and understanding of Xanxia as a genre.
His expertise really comes across in the quality of this book. Very strong example of a eastern style novel written by a western author. I like how creative he was with Ogres as a race. It tied in unbelievably well. Very creative spin on a old school fantasy monster.
The world is immersive, the storyline is complex and multifaceted, the magic/cultivation system is pretty standard, but we get to see it from the perspective of the pioneers who developed the first techniques. Its a very different take on how these stories are normally written.
I have been impressed. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in these cultivation based stories.

Also, I want to thank Deathblade for the great work he did with ISSTH and AWE back in the day ...and for that one post you made about a little book called "Cradle" by the then relatively unknown Will Wight.

First and foremost this is an enjoyable book

While I can't comment on how new or experienced the author is in relation to writing as a whole, I can say confidently that he is well-educated and knowledgeable about the genre he is writing. It's a good story that is well executed and I do look forward to what he brings to the table in the future.
However, the audiobook is held back from being as good as it could be due to the complete newness of the narrator. It is immediately clear that the narrator has no prior experience in the industry and is possible that English is not her first language as there are moments where she does bungle pronunciation in odd ways (but not badly/oddly enough to matter). That being said, her clear understanding of how to pronounce Chinese words did enhance my enjoyment and made following along easier.
Despite the narrator's complete inexperience, it is clear that she enjoys narrating the book and does try to ensure that the listener understands everything. It took me some time to adjust to her as a narrator so that I could follow along comfortably, but once I did I found that if I missed something in the story it was due to distractions happening around me, rather than the inexperience of the narrator.
So I will say that this is an enjoyable book and that if you want a good wuxia novel then this is a solid option. Just know of the narrator's inexperience going into it, and be patient. I have definitely listened to worse narrators and I usually don't hesitate to refund those I find unbearable/inappropriate for the subject matter of the book.

It is slow and just not for me

My true rating is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, but more 3 than 4.

I will be returning the book after 6 hours. It's not bad just not what I was looking for and I find my self not listening to it. The performance is not the best but not bad. The story is somewhat slow and I find my self say "duh" and just rolling my eyes. With both the performance and story not being strong there is nothing that is carrying me through.

if you are interested in trying it out I say go for it. you can always return it if it's not your cup of tea.

Hindi in a Wuxia Novel.

Narrator:

There were someplace where the narration got a little awkward, but you can feel the Narrator enjoy the story with you, that make is enjoyable and overlook the minor things.

Author:

As far as all the Wuxia novels I have read
are considered, this story is a definite well above average and does not overstay it's welcome. Most plotline are wrapped, few mysteries are left for us to explore.
Overall a good read that can be completed on a weekend.

And I was weirdly excited when I heard Hindi for the first time in a Wuxia Novel. So, are Nangu Hindi speaking populations? Is the monkey attack a stereotyping, just kidding. But really after reading so many Webnovel/Light Novel this is my first time coming across one that an language from my country.
