Publisher's summary

A story of courage, perseverance, and patriotism behind the 75th Army Rangers’ rescue mission following one of the deadliest Special Operations incidents in Afghanistan - a grueling search for 12 Navy SEAL casualties and eight downed Night Stalkers - but just one lone survivor.

On June 28, 2005, a four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance team under Operation Red Wings was ambushed in Northeastern Afghanistan - as depicted in the book and film Lone Survivor. A quick reaction force was dispatched to assist them. Turbine 33, carrying eight Navy SEALs and eight members of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade, bringing the dual-rotor chinook careening toward the rugged peak of Sawtalo Sar.

The result was the deadliest single incident in Afghanistan Special Operations at the time.

Commanders, unwilling to let this disaster get any worse, quickly called on the largest element of the secretive Joint Special Operations Command, the 75th Ranger Regiment. The rescue mission: Operation Red Wings II.

Tony Brooks, then a newly minted Army Ranger, tells a firsthand account of the daring recovery of Turbine 33 and the subsequent search for the remaining compromised Navy SEAL reconnaissance team - one of whom was Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor. The Rangers would need to overcome lack of intelligence assessment, treacherous terrain, violent weather, and an enemy that was born and raised to fight.

Like his fellow Rangers, Tony Brooks lived - and many died - by the axiom, “Leave No Man Behind”. His account is the first to tell the story that other books and films have left out, one of courage, skill, and perseverance in overcoming overwhelming odds to accomplish a mission to bring every American soldier home.

don't make assumptions going into this book

I enjoyed the book it's just not what I expected. I expected his team were the ones that stumbled across Marcus luttrell and personally he would write something along the lines of "I assisted in carrying him out" that's not what I got at all but I have over 800 books in my audible library and I loved the psychology that went into this book. the last 30 minutes of the book by itself makes the entire book worth listening to. more people need to be able to look past the pumpkin and see the soldier or at the very least see the chasm that's opening up between civilian and military troops and recognize that they as the civilian have the ability to reduce the PTSD on our troops simply by building Bridges with the veterans instead of building walls and recognizing that the veterans dark humor are Shields against sadness and a psychological breakdown.

his standpoint on the belief that the chasm between civilians and veterans is what can catalyzes PTSD and his views about how we should change that deserves a book by itself.

Thank You for your service Ranger Brooks

Great story

Great story to hear, but the reader obviously wasn’t former military. Not that it should be a requirement, but it was very noticeable when he mispronounced places, acronyms, or calibers. Still did a great job other than that, and the story more than made up for the errors.

Pride

This book was amazing. I have already recommended it to friends and felt nothing but American pride and the desire to serve others other than myself being strengthened by this story.

Excellent

I am always interested in the back story.
His reason for Joining the Army was very noble.
His 1st hand accounts of being deployed in a War Zone gives the listeners insight and it's not always pretty.

Good to hear a different perspective.

I enjoyed hearing a different side of ORW, one that is lost behind the headlines. Glad he put his experience into words to share.

Good little behind the scenes

This was a good book. Nothing to spectacular no drama just the nitty gritty facts. About a blown operation and the operation to rescue those who gave the ultimate sacrifice with operation redwing. Enjoy!

Everything about the book, from start to finish, kept my attention. There was a little of something for everyone, and it was told from an interesting viewpoint. My family and teenage kids all loved it.
