'Rich, intricate worldbuilding meets swoonworthy romance. . . Phédre and Joscelin’s story is the beating heart of every romantasy to follow' - Olivie Blake

Winner of the Locus Award for Best First Novel, Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey is an intoxicating fantasy of intrigue, betrayal and desire – perfect for fans of Sarah J. Mass and Jennifer L. Armentrout.

Servant. Seductress. Spy.

All Phèdre nó Delaunay has known is a life of servitude – until now. When her bond is purchased by a nobleman, Anafiel Delaunay, he transforms her into a charming courtesan and skillful spy. He’s also the first to recognize what she is: one touched by the god Kushiel’s dart, chosen to forever experience pain and pleasure as one.

But when Phèdre uncovers a plot that threatens the very foundations of her homeland, she’s thrown into a world of deadly courtiers, heroic traitors and one truly Machiavellian villainess. Her journey will take her to the edge of despair and beyond. For false friends, loving enemies and beloved assassins all wear the same glittering masks – and Phèdre will get but one chance to save all that she holds dear.

‘Sophisticated fantasy, intricately plotted and a fascinating read’ - Robert Jordan
‘Superbly detailed . . . sometimes unbearably intense’ - Kirkus Reviews

An Epic Political Drama clothed in a delicate and heart rending romantic fantasy.
My grievances are small and few. One the length, it rivals epic fantasy but unlike them this is drenched in character drama that can even a lightweight and dnf veteran like me afloat.
And the second is the low fantasy nature of the world. I was hardly aware of it even being a fantasy until we were well it, although i’m probably in the minority given the nature of the world building. This however is a small matter and when the magic and fantastical elements did come in to play, I was thoroughly enchanted and wrapped. And it is that magical element of the book that has me looking towards the second book in this series.
These characters are beautiful, and complicated , the world building is somehow familiar for those of us who love historical drama, but also fresh and exciting. And their interactions with each other kept me in a chokehold, especially when I’m the kind of person to wear the movement of fictional armies and crumbling of nations matter little. When the world is at stake I just want to know are they going to kiss lol.
This book has some thing for everyone I believe. Epic political drama and intricate beautiful romance. Knights and their vows, courtesans and their secrets, heartbreak and elation. Read it. It’s a great time and it’s a really good book. It makes so many of the books. I’ve read lately look shallow, and flippant in comparison.

Long…but gorgeous and worth it.
