The story of Jonah is one of the most well-known parables in the Bible. It is also the most misunderstood. Many people, even those who are nonreligious, are familiar with Jonah: A rebellious prophet who defies God and is swallowed by a whale. But there's much more to Jonah's story than most of us realize. In The Prodigal Prophet, pastor and New York Times best-selling author Timothy Keller reveals the hidden depths within the book of Jonah. Keller makes the case that Jonah was one of the worst prophets in the entire Bible.

Even people who are not professing Christians think they are familiar with the story of the Nativity. Every Christmas, displays of Jesus resting in a manger populate lawns and churchyards, and songs about shepherds and angels fill the air. Yet despite the abundance of these Christian references in popular culture, how many of us have examined the hard edges of this biblical story? Timothy Keller takes listeners on an illuminating journey into the surprising background of the Nativity.

Story
In an age where pleasing people, puffing up your ego and building your résumé are seen as the methods to "make it", the Apostle Paul calls us to find true rest in blessed self forgetfulness. In this short and punchy book, best selling author Timothy Keller, shows that gospel humility means we can stop connecting every experience, every conversation with ourselves and can thus be free from self condemnation. A truly gospel humble person is not a self-hating person or a self-loving person, but a self-forgetful person.

Story
A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word.

Publisher's Summary
New York Times best-selling author and nationally renowned minister Timothy Keller unlocks new insights into the life of Jesus Christ.
King's Cross is Timothy Keller's revelatory look at the life of Christ as told in the Gospel of Mark. There have been many biographies of Jesus, but few will be as anticipated as this one by Keller, the man Newsweek calls "a C. S. Lewis for the 21st century".
In it, Keller shows how the story of Jesus is at once cosmic, historical, and personal, calling each of us to look anew at our relationship with God. Like Keller's other books, it has tremendous crossover appeal, but it is also ideal for the faithful, those who are looking for closer connections to Jesus and Christianity.
Please note: This book has also been published under the alternate title Jesus the King: Understanding the Life and Death of the Son of God.
Critic Reviews
"In discussing the identity of Jesus, the author describes him as a man both deeply embedded within his culture and times while also living counter to them in many ways.... The author describes a man aware of his upcoming sacrifice, and indeed, a man in continual sacrifice, as he had descended from heaven to live on earth. Captivating reading from a Christian perspective." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Keller engages the reader with astute pastoral application, littered with excellent sermon illustrations.... [King's Cross] finds Keller in familiar territory: producing another great book, leaving readers from atheist to Christian grappling with the nature and implications of the gospel of Jesus Christ." (Michael Johnson, DesiringGod.org)
"This is the book where Tim Keller hits his stride as an author.... Keller directs readers' gazes toward the cross and will not allow them to look away." (Collin Hansen, The Gospel Coalition)

Jesus for Real People
When I read most Christian Books, it feels more like an overt sales pitch - the author is trying to convert me to his or her way of thinking, but the funny thing is that most Christian authors also communicate in such a way that if you don't already share their presuppositions it is difficult to thoughtfully consider what they are saying.
Timothy Keller is an author for "everyman" (and woman). He writes in an engaging style that invited me to consider what he is saying in a language that normal people speak. He presents a Jesus for real people.

Narrator voice -- not quite Tim Keller
The book, "King's Cross," is excellent for a compelling overview of amazing treasures that are often overlooked in the Biblical book of Mark. A particularly relevant resource as we are approaching Easter 2011.
I am used to the author's voice through audio files of his sermons. So I had to adjust to hearing Lloyd James' voice and rhythm of narration. Once I focused on the work itself rather than the sound of the narration, I found Mr. James' version to be fine -- just not what I expected at first listen.
A great resource -- just don't expect Tim Keller's voice.

Profound and intelligent look at the life of Jesus
If you could sum up King's Cross in three words, what would they be?
Thorough, Relavant, Fresh
What was one of the most memorable moments of King's Cross?
The description of the girl following an invisible thread leading her on a scarry journey. I powerful picture of what it is like following the king. We don't know where he is leading us, but we know it will get us home.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to the book in parts. There was much rich content to pause and chew on.
Any additional comments?
When I gave the hard copy of this book to a deep-thinking teacher, he was very encouraged. He said he wanted to read it again to get more out of it.

Simultaneously not what is was looking for and exactly what I was looking for.
It would take was too long to explain what I mean by this.
Put simply, I was looking for a quick historical overview of the Christ’s life and the historical context thereof.
This book did not quite give me that, but it also, somehow, did.
Not much else I can say except: “He is risen, he is risen indeed.”

A life changing experience
Are you a Christian? This is a MUST read as it pertains to the practicalities of Jesus’ characteristics and the provision His death gave for us in a western culture. The Bible was not written in a westernized mindset, nor did Jesus live the western cultured life. This book helps the westernized believer better understand the story of Jesus.
