Mary DiNunzio gets a terrifying telephone call while she's working late, then goes home to find a shadow lurking at her front door. When a lawyer close to her turns up dead, Mary begins to suspect that the case she's been working on, involving the suicide of an Italian-American in an internment camp during World War II, may not be ancient history after all.©2004 Lisa Scottoline (P)2004 Recorded Books, Inc. and © 2004 HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. Reseñas editoriales

Spunky, young lawyer Mary DeNunzio becomes passionately entwined in a dusty, old estate settlement involving an Italian-American immigrant who comes to life in Mary's imagination. When an associate is murdered, Mary is convinced it's related to her case and pursues the truth against all odds. Barbara Rosenblat deftly delivers many colorful secondary characters. Her treatment of older people is especially sensitive and credible. She presents the heroine with an almost neutral voice, underplaying Mary's South Philadelphia identity. An interview with the author at the end of the recording provides entertaining insight, especially on the topic of Italian-Americans interned during WWII.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Scottoline skillfully weaves a complicated, gripping, and fast-paced tale, at turns comical, nerve-wracking, and enlightening." (Publishers Weekly)

I Love all her books. Amazing. I wish the space between chapters was smaller though.

Loved it

First, I should say I haven't read the book. I should have listened to the sample! The narrator has a dry mouth and moistens it frequently while reading. It's very distracting. I only listed 10 minutes.

Love history, and Scottoline keeps you guessing, as always. What I really love, though, is the humor. She's hilarious.
This book had a bit of language, but not much, compared to some of her other work (you never know what you are going to get with Scottoline).
Some sexual references and crass talk, but not too much (reference to vibrator for instance, and enjoying sex). Violence was about the same as her other work. I appreciate that she doesn't dwell on violence in a sick way, as some other authors do these days!

Fun bit of history thrown in the mix!

The narrator is just too noisy! At some points i am sure she is smoking a cigarette while she is reading. She eats, makes slurping noises and gets “juicy mouth” . Its disgusting! I really wish they would re-record this entire series!

Great book except

This is the first book by Lisa Scottoline that I've listened to and I enjoyed everything about it. Being a suburban Philadelphian, of course, made me smile at all the locales that were familiar.

The story develops as I would imagine all mysteries do with the careful interviewing of anyone who has information. The reader feels each dead end and each moment of discovery.

I've listened to other books narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. The narration didn't disappoint and I was sucked right into the story and the characters.

First Scottoline but definately not my last!

I've never read Scottoline before but I was impressed. The book was exciting and full of tidbits of humor. I plan to listen to it again now that I know the ending!

Great book!

A good book but ruined by the narrator because of her constant smacking and watery mouth. I could have taken her inflection and interpretation of the characters, but with the smacking it made it even more grating. I heard the author interviewed and really looked forward to this book. I wish I had read this one instead of downloading.

Plot was interesting but wow, the narrator has a lot of mouth noise...very distracting in head phones.

What's with the mouth noise?

I liked everything about the book. The history of Italian immigrants fascinated me and inspired me.
