Acerca de esta escucha

Civil War veteran John Carter is transported to a dying planet, where he must elude capture by giant green barbarians to rescue a Martian princess from certain doom. In this landmark of science fiction, the myths and mystery of the red planet supply a vibrant backdrop for a swashbuckling epic.

Published in 1911, A Princess of Mars introduced a popular series of novels recounting John Carter's Martian exploits. Author Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known as the creator of Tarzan, employed a new style of writing that combined the genres of fantasy, adventure, and science fiction. His imaginative setting - an advanced but decaying civilization in which Olympian heroics play out against malevolent forces and ever-changing fortunes - endures as a timeless world, in which love, honor, and loyalty form the basis for fast-paced romantic adventures.

I have listened to this story twice by two different narrators. Scott Brick makes it a pleasure to listen to and enjoy!

The story is obviously different than the movie but based upon this book but it is no less enjoyable either way if you discard the expectation that the movie was anything like the book other than a few characters with the same names. I think the book is actually better than the movie. However the movie gave me interesting visuals as I listened to this story for the second time and constructed the scenes in my mind.

If you like Science Fiction you need to listen to this story!

Surprisingly good science fiction for over 100 years old. Good character development and really great passion and emotion.

Great science fiction for over 100 years old.

It's interesting to read the style and language of the pulp era. The stories are fun, simple and entertaining. They are also racist and misogynist. Scott Brick is not for me - a little over the top dramatic, but he gets totally in it.

Interesting Genre source reading

Where does John Carter in 'A Princess of Mars' rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Pretty high. I really enjoyed it. I was amazed at how good it was given it's age

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

He is just a fantastic reader.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

LOL. I think somebody already did that....

Any additional comments?

The book and the movie are not polar opposites, but they do tell different stories. I highly recommend the book. I was amazed that it is now 100 years old. I hope that they hire Scott Brick to read the remainder of the series. Many of the subsequent books don't have great reviews on performance.

I wish I had known about this book series as a teenager (when I had more time to sit and read). I would have eaten them up!

Wow! Wish I had found this book as a young adult.

There are many points I'd like to make in this review.

- For being a book written in the early 1900's, the "sci-fi" was great. Such imagination and quite descriptive to actually provide a picture in the readers head.

- Normally I read a book before watching a movie, and even then I approach both without prejudice to the other. However, in this case, I thought the movie was much better. I believe my reasoning is in the fact that the movie gets to the next big points of the story that much quicker. Still a decent read, although I might not continue on in the series.

- John Carter himself was amazing, as well as a few of his supporting characters. Edgar Rice Burroughs portrays John as loyal, fierce, determined, and a respectful man. In other words, he makes him the perfect package complete with looks, strength, and attitude. Which definitely made it worthwhile.

Decent Story, but Lacking!

Between the spectacular “I will not let you put me down “ grab the author has on reader and Scott’s multiple split personalities while performing, the experience of this book is like watching a wonderful movie for 6 hours non stop. 👍👍👍👍👍 probably one of my favorite listens. Thank you.

Why 5 stars? Cannot give more!

I really enjoyed the performance of the narrator. The story is a bit dated but really fun. I did struggle with the fact that the main character was a confederate soldier and I understand the at the time that social views were different for example calling Native Americans Red men or savages. However it's briefly touched on in the beginning so if you can look past that the overall story was good.
