Story
My darling little boy Albie adores playing at our new neighbours’ house. And after the terrible year we’ve had, I feel so lucky that we can start over in this perfect place, with new friends who treat Albie like the son they never had. He can’t stop talking about the tree house they’re building him, and the cookies they bake together. But as time passes, something starts to feel wrong. Why don’t they ever open the front door more than a crack? They told me they had no children so who does the small pink tricycle I saw in their hall belong to?

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

I hated this book!
It’s been a long time since a book has frustrated me so much! Apart from the idea of a failed undercover agent getting put into a situation where her predecessor was killed, all the incidents just seemed impossible. Along with an unbelievable plot, the narrators ‘over-acting’ almost had me quitting every time the handler (can’t remember his name, that’s how much this book impressed me) spoke. What’s with the aggressive tone? And let’s not get into the inmates tones. Aghhh, this has to be the most frustrating read of the year if not more.
Avoid!!!

Glad I finally chose this exciting British thriller!
What took me so long to grab this gem in the Audible Plus catalogue? Detective Constable Bailey Morgan goes undercover in a women’s prison and investigates drug dealing and brutal murders. Author Caro Savage’s well-paced and intricate talents make this a captivating tale. Add narrator Genevieve Swallow with her pitch-perfect vocals and we have a compelling listen. Filled with suspenseful subplots and surprises, “Jailbird” is highly recommended. I look forward to more by these two perfectly matched women. An awesome nod to Audible for offering it at no cost.

Gripping but overly wordy
This was a great story about a policewoman (Bailey) going undercover in a prison which is run by a gang of violent inmates and corrupt staff. It's very well written and gripped me from the start. My only complaint is that the author could have lost about a 1/5th of the book due to being over descriptive and repetitive - I'm surprised this wasn't picked up by her editor or maybe she had a minimum number of words to hit!! Overall though this was a great read and I will definitely look out for more books by Caro Savage.

Oh My Goodness

First of all, when I read, the hours of listening, for this Book, I hoped it was going to be a worthwhile Story.
Since I have over 300 Books on my list, a lot of them finished, I wondered which one was going to be next.
I suffer from Insomnia, often using a Book to help me get a few hours sleep.
It’s currently 02.43hrs, I began listening at 0.1.30hrs the night before this, no sleep as I just couldn’t put this Book away !
What an introduction to an Author I had not read before !!
Gripping Tale on the off.
Loved the Story line and it’s Heroine.
Twists and Turns around every corner, and plenty of Suspects.
Kudos for choosing a marvellous Narrator.
Easy to listen to, can make or break the enjoyment.
I loved the Book and am happy, recommending ‘Jailbird’.
My Thanks to the Author, Narrator and Audible 🙏🦋

Nice self contained story, interesting plot
Narration was good, male characters took a while to get used to but overall a good listen

Bleak
This was a captivating but gut wrenching story. I can’t see any other reviews where the content was mentioned but much of it was harrowing and hard for me to listen to. Such a sad and bleak story line but I guess that doesn’t make it a bad book.
Bit slow in the middle but kept going as I wanted to know the end :(

Good story, not so good narration
This was a good story ( although a little long winded at times) but I thought it was spoilt by the narrator. Most of her female characters sounded like cockney 12 year old girls and the men like 9 year old angry boys ( particularly her boss Frank ). I love stories set in a prison but the characters were mostly unbelievable and predictable. The only voice she did well was 'crazy' Mel.
Glad I didn't pay for this one.

Nice Flow
Tried this as a new author - good story and nice flow - good enough to have me purchase the second one in the series.

Poor narration
Good story but narrator awful to listen to. Voices poor - I guess this would appeal to a young teen maybe

kept me entertained all the way through
pretty decent story reasonably well read. some of the internal prison stuff didn't ring quite true but it is well worth the time to listen to.
