Publisher's summary

Officers from the RSPCA investigate reports of animal cruelty and neglect on a farm, only to discover a 5-year-old boy curled up asleep in a dog bed, amidst filth and squalor.

He has severe physical and cognitive impairments, and no one outside the family seems to know of the existence of little Jacob.

When he arrives in the Allen household, a terrified Louise wonders how on earth she will cope looking after a child with his level of physical and emotional damage. With the support of veteran social worker, Mary, the fight begins to get Jacob the support he needs - as medical investigations begin to reveal more shocking details about Jacob’s story.

The children come first

As a child who grew up in “system” this book enables me to be angry at the people who deserve it and a little less at myself.
Thank you for writing this and bringing to light so many of the shortfalls of the foster care system.
I absolutely would recommend this book, and actually, I already have!

Inspirational, as always!

I can't stop listening. Although these "stories" start off with the children's struggle, it always ends on a happy note. Not all of the looked after children have happy endings, but it's nice to hear a few! MORE FUNDING! MORE GIVE A DA** needed!

Enlightening

I was taken to a place where I could stand next to Louise cheering her on. She used love, kindness, inclusion and her special brand of respect and encouragement to reach Jacob. She and her Social Worker advocate Mary, bucked the system to care for this child and make sure he was adopted into a family perfect for him. I loved it!

Louise is a fantastic person and carer.

She reminds me of Cathy Glass. Read both authors! The books are so good and Cathy has lots of books to read. MORE LOUISA!!

Excellent male narrator

After buying this book, I was initially disappointed to discover it was narrated by a man, because it’s written by a woman and told from her perspective. I decided to give it a chance because I really wanted to hear the story, and I’m glad I did. I quickly got over my disappointment and enjoyed it very much.

Jacob’s Story

This is a wonderful book and very enlightening. The way it describes the inadequacies of the care system is heartbreaking. The author is brilliant and I hope her words are listened to by the people who ‘manage the system.

What an amazing series.

Having a different narrator for this last book was rough. The series is so amazing though, it made little impact. I love Louise Allen. I hope there are more books to come.
