Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating life of Ivan the Terrible, then pay attention...

Considering that he has gone down in history as Ivan the Terrible, the first tsar of Russia could hardly have been a boy scout. As his name suggests, Ivan had an utterly terrifying presence during his 37-year-long reign.

Ivan's story is not only one of brutality, it is also a tale of great suffering. It's the story of a little boy whose father died when he was just a toddler and a story of a child whose mother was poisoned when he was only seven years old. This was a boy who had to struggle to survive as the warring nobility threatened, molested, and harassed him endlessly while he tried to protect his only friend - his deaf and mute little brother.

This is also the tale of a young man who was desperate for power to defend himself and found it when he was made the tsar. And it's almost the story of a good and capable ruler whose wild temper was soothed by the presence of a tsaritsa who seemed capable of calming the storm that was Ivan's mind. But sadly, Ivan's beloved first wife was poisoned and died in agony, plunging him into a cauldron of darkness and depression that produced the tyrant that has gone down in history as a monster.

In this book, you'll discover his story.

Recommended!

First off, the man literally was insane and should be defined historically as a serial killer. One can say that it was a different time, or that he was an absolute monarch and therefore, was corrupted by absolute power. I disagree, anyone who takes pleasure in the distance blood sprays when an artery is hit is probably insane. Moreso, when the victims are clergy or even members of your own family.

Comprehensive

This audiobook gives a comprehensive history of Ivan's life and the state of Russia throughout, but the tone is simple, straight-forward, even conversational. It's an easy and even compelling read that I found hard to put down. I would recommend it to anyone of just about any reading level who wants to learn more.

Very Interesting

For the curious reader who knows little of Ivan the Terrible and wants to know more, but doesn't want to wade through all the pretentious, elevated language and sleep-inducing droning that often accompanies textbooks, this book is for you!

Enjoyed It

This biography separates mythological from the authentic Ivan IV. Based on fascinating diplomatic correspondence, seniors of contemporaries, church and state archives and newly discovered records from longer-term, this detailed and well organized interpretive biography is fascinating and convincing. Highly recommended

Beautiful

It is a beautifully done audiobook and shows a lot about a Russian subject that we are familiar with here in the West, but about whom we don't know much.

Well-Researched

Expertly written and researched. Ivan was pure evil in its most sadistic form, he slaughtered on a whim, and thought nothing of it, until in old age he tries to repent and make amends with those who perished under his rule.

WOW!

While some things get glossed over, it is an easy read on an interesting subject. Good for an overall view of Russia in that period.

An In-Depth Book

Much of the detail is widely unknown which is what I appreciated most about reading it. One gets s deeper understanding of Ivan the man.

So Good

For me this very relatable book filled in what for me had been a blank page in history. It is not a book for the easily depressed or shocked. Even for his time when the cruelty of kings was common, Ivan stood out as a monster.

Horrifying

Ivan was a curse to his country. A coward, religious zealot, rabid inferiority complex and a downright homicidal maniac. Something of a horrowing experience following this maniac through his reign of absolute terror.

A Good Biography

This is not only a magnificent history of Ivan, but of Russia itself. From the raw frozen and muddy landscapes to the grand palaces of the Great Prince.....you will travel through 16th century Russia from the safety of your own home and yet ...continue to shudder from the cold winds, and icy stare of the red haired, Ivan Vasilievich!

Interesting

I enjoyed this book and got through it fairly quickly, but I'm not sure what the appropriate review should be. I came into this knowing nothing of Ivan except his name. The book told a complete story of a life and convinced me quite thoroughly of the man's wicked ways indeed.

Enjoyed It

I enjoyed this very much. Here you have the historical debate of Church and State, which I understand Russia is revisiting now.
