Story
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
The stars are within mankind’s reach…but what awaits in the void may end humanity.
Mars and the Moon have been colonized, piracy runs rampant in the asteroid belts, and a thriving society grows in the depths of space. Humanity prepares to embark upon its greatest journey - the colonization of Alpha Centauri.
Then, everything changes. A deep space reconnaissance probe discovers a new Earth-like planet 12 light-years from Earth’s sun. The probe also finds something unusual, something...unnerving. A new mission is created, a space fleet is formed, and humanity embarks on unravelling the greatest mystery of all - the origins of life itself.
Can the factions of Earth remain united, or will old rivalries and animosities destroy the fragile peace in the face of this terrifying existential threat? Will exploration prove to be a fatal mistake?
If you love new technologies, fast-paced action, and gut-wrenching turns of fate, you’ll love this military sci-fi series.

Came for Jonathan Davis, stayed for the story
You know the drill. Too many choices makes spending your next credit difficult. Some time ago I started searching for new listens based on good narrators. That's how I stumbled upon this title.
Another review said this book reminded them of Star Trek and other Earth future Sci Fi - I tend to agree. I also like the level of detail in regards to the technology.
Its only early in the series and I can feel the story arcs developing, enough that I'll try the second installment. I'll be looking for more character development. There's some, but there needs to be more in my view. Having said that, its enjoyable and feels to be going somewhere.
However, be warned. Rosone is a Musk fan boy. I did think about stopping right when I first heard a reference, but pettiness is unbecoming someone older than 5.

Glorious Take On Science Fiction
As a child of the 70's I grew up reading Asimov and Bradbury. Watching Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. As the 80's came I watched more scifi and military dramas. This novel captures the spirit of many of my favorite scifi novels and movies that I grew up with. I captured my mind and left me ready for the next installment. I am visually impaired so I love that this was available on audiobook along with so many others. James Rosone is a wonderful storyteller!

Pleasantly surprised. First…. I could listen to Jonathan Davis read the phone book. You youngsters are thinking “what’s a phone book?”
Doesn’t matter.
Now that the set up for the meat of the series is finished I’m looking forward to the second book. I have already downloaded it so I should get to it.

The sci-fi story I always wanted
This is a fantastic example of what science fiction should be which is grounded in reality, without being too boring or dry. I’d highly recommend this book to anybody interested in any kind of sci-fi, As it is brought to life by one of the best narrators I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. 10 out of 10

A good start to the story
A good start to a new series. It has the required amount of space battles, hostile aliens, ground action and jepordy to keep me entertained, without going too much into politics or wrenching up the suspense to the extent where I feel uncomfortable.
The only thing I think it's missing is a little light comic relief, whilst it's entertaining (and I will be buying the next one) , it can be a little dry.
Oh fair warning. It ends on a cliff hanger.

Just Terrible
Predictable and poorly written. The characters don't behave like normal humans, and this theme continues right through the book with the characters stumbling into predictable situations and generating the worst possible outcomes.
The performance was also lacklustre. The pacing was all over the place, it felt at time like the narrator was getting paid by the hour, not the word.

An epic start of a thrilling series!
As someone who is a beta reader for James Rosone, I have seen this book in the early stages of its life. The world-building is so intriguing and thought-provoking. The spaceship designs are so awesom. The characters are just what you'd wish for, and the nods to the current trends of science are on point!
Now, it feels so great to see it be brought to life by a talented audio production. This narrator fits the narrative style perfectly. For the Irish Space Pirate, it sounded like he gave his best Liam Neeson impression (I mean, of course!), while also taking the initiative with character voices.
Be sure to check it out! This will be one of many, so start now.
