Spoiler alert: this method works

This is the most hassle-free way I've found to effectively refresh my Spanish skills. I listened to this book while doing housework, just as I would with any other audiobook, and with my attention partly on chores I was still able to both follow the story and gain exposure to a lot of helpful new vocabulary.

The title describes this book as "10 short stories," but it's actually one continuous story divided into ten chapters. That's good, because the continuity helps keep you listening. Each chapter concludes with a supplemental section that summarizes what's just happened, both in Spanish and English, then drills several dozen vocabulary words from the story, and finally asks a few multiple-choice reading comprehension questions. This is a solid formula for strengthening your skills, and it helps that the story, which is about an American student traveling for the first time in Latin America, is cute and easy to listen to.

What makes this book a standout though is the narrator. Mariela Arredondo is seriously A+, both as a language teacher and storyteller. Right from the introduction, a section that tends to be filler in most language-learning recordings, Mariela's warmth and energetic delivery is a welcome surprise that didn't even once tempt me to use the skip button. Her advice and encouragement will, I daresay, actually leave you feeling well-advised and encouraged. Even better, she's a great performer. Her expressive voice makes it easy to tell apart the different characters and their emotions, which both aids comprehension and breathes no small amount of life into the material.

The clarity of Mariela's delivery also means you can get the most bang for your buck by increasing the speed of the audio on repeat listens. The crystal clear pronunciation won't get muddled if you raise the tempo, and that makes this book a great practice tool for learning how to follow speedy Spanish speakers. It also makes the vocabulary sections doubly valuable. I found these sections to be way less boring than the drills in other language learning tapes, because they reinforce words you already have memorable context for from the story. The vocab sections also give you time to focus on Mariela's model pronunciation, and fine-tune your own.

I took Spanish in grade school for years, and since then I've made countless earnest, but short-lived, attempts to improve. If you've tried to read novels in Spanish, get through language-learning tapes, watch telenovelas for more than the unintentional comedy and so on - first of all, high five, and second, consider giving this book a try. With minimal commitment, it gets you back into the swing of learning; and, just as importantly, it paves the way toward being able to confidently read or listen to your own choice of material in Spanish.

I've been trying to learn Spanish, and being able to put the language into context has been invaluable. These stories are a great way to set context, identify structure, and parse the language as a natural means of communication rather than just random words.

The narrator has a strong, clear voice and excellent pronunciation. I found it easy to follow the stories.

Good Supplemental Study Tool

I enjoyed listening to the stories and learned that I have a lot to learn (or rather remember) after a year plus of no practice and decades of being removed from academia. Recall came easily though, especially through the second listen. The well written stories, solid narration, and the fact that I’m finally actively engaged with learning Spanish again makes multiple listens easy and enjoyable. In that light, Lingo Mastery is a useful supplement to other learning tools— especially person-to-person practice. I have the same concern as Audible subscriber Rebecca Azizov stated in her review of Lingo Mastery’s *Conversational Spanish Dialogues: Over 100 Spanish Conversations and Short Stories*, Lingo Mastery needs to place more emphasis on dialects and regional word usage.

Lingo Master Intermediate Spanish Short Stories

I love this Book. I have the paperback version as well and I am using them together. I listen to the audio first and the listen again as I follow along with the book. It is a great way to hear and learn the correct pronunciation and build vocabulary al at the same time . Great learning tool!!

I really enjoyed this!

I am re-learning Spanish after more than 20 years of not speaking it (I used to be very conversant, though never totally fluent). I'm taking Spanish classes, and my teacher recommended listening to Spanish learning audiobooks. I am not an audiobook person in general, but it has been so useful! I listen in the car and while working out. The story is cute and interesting enough to keep me wanting to listen. Each chapter ends with vocabulary, which is useful, and chapter summaries in English and Spanish, which are ok (at the intermediate level I think we could do without the English summary) The narrator is clear and has a pleasant voice to listen to. She uses different voices for characters, which is helpful. Overall, I can understand it completely, even if I don't know 100% of the vocabulary. Definitely an intermediate level without being over-simplified. The only thing to note is that I think the narrator is Argentinian, or from another country where they pronounce double l and y with a "sh" sound -- this is not how I learned the pronunciation studying Mexican Spanish! I asked my Mexican Spanish teacher and she said it was a regional accent. Not a big deal, but just a heads up, as for a minute I was worried I had been pronouncing those words wrong all along! Again, though, highly recommend this book. Oh, as others have said, it's one ten chapter story, not ten different stories!

It’s really good as it’s broke into a short roughly 20 minute story ; then a summary in Spanish , then a summary in English; vocabulary review, and then a few multiple choice questions in Spanish . Loved it

Great for learning intermediate Spanish

This book was a great way for me as intermediate Spanish student to learn more and hear Spanish in a way that I could easily understand.

Contains all aspects of learning a language

Vocabulary and grammar adecuado for intermediate level.
I
