Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Fantastic!
First impressions after finishing this book.....Give me more of Darcy and this universe! (You're in luck dear reader! See below )
I found The Druid Gene after reading Jennifer's other works; Fluency and Remance (look them up, they are fantastic too!), and wasn't quite sure what I would make of this book. I was so enthralled with her previous work, and wanted more of those characters, that I was concerned this would leave me wanting. Boy was I wrong! Jennifer Foehner Wells , delivers an engaging and captivating story, set in a universe familiar to those who have read the books noted above. The main character, Darcy, is a strong if sometimes naive lead, but throughout the story she comes into her own, and her story, along with the supporting characters draw you in and make this book a page turner (it's an audible book. but you know what I mean !)
I truly hope there are more books on the horizon for both Darcy and her band of misfits, and the others from her previous work. I can see a cross over event at some point which would be absolute craziness! I hope Jennifer Foehner Wells has the writing bug in her cause we certainly need more of this !

Climb on board the Vermachten
Jennifer Foehner Wells never does what you expect... and this book proves just that. But this is an interesting addition to the Confluence Universe. The Druid Gene introduces a whole new set of players... I think that in the first 2 books I was so fixated on the kuboderan, that I wasn't paying all that much attention to the broad diversity of sentient life the series offered... Well the Druid Gene brings this concept to the fore... As Darcy along with her boyfriend are abducted by The Vermachten a slave ship. The ship is seemingly at full capacity, alien species of all kinds and colors. Slaves in confinement waiting until they are sold. And Darcy well she is special in ways that she had no idea of... Darcy has to learn fast if she is going to survive. And as she learns she makes allies.
So climb on board and discover a realm of new possibilities, as Jennifer weaves her storylines together... the Confluence is going to need all the allies it can find to stop the Swarm...
Addendum... I just listened to Robin Miles audio version of this book and I gotta say that it is brilliant... She gave voice not just to Darcy but to several other creatures introduced in this story and I was captivated... I think Jennifer Foehner Wells made a enlightened decision by getting a different narrator for this new story thread in her series...

Not the same story line as the first 2. I bought this as it was said to be a third in the series. After 11 chapters I could no longer listen to the clicking and clacking of the interpretation of the other beings. Totally disappointed

Good book, but barely a side story...
As a "Confluence" series book, this annoyed me profoundly.
It does not fit in line with the first two books at all other than a couple of token references to species and concepts from the first two books and a reference to those books' characters on the last page of the book.
It is a good story and was well-read, but calling it book 3 of the Confluence series felt like a cheap way for the author to sell a new story to existing fans of a loosely related one.
Perhaps Wells will tie the stories together in a later book. For now though, this book seems like a tangent.

Not the same as book 1 and 2 but
I like the universe that the story is told in but I do not totally like the way it's being told. This book really has a racist Viewpoint of the character that is not needed to tell the story. the story is good enough to get past this but only barely. I'll have to think hard about whether or not I go to book for.

introducing all new characters
Almost nothing worse (reading-wise) than picking up the next book in a series to find that it introduces a whole new set of characters and abandons the story from the prior books. This one does that. However, it's still pretty good. Slow moving. Mostly setting, back-story and character development. Nearly all of the action comes nearer the end of the book.
I'm writing this after having listened to the fourth volume. You might be thinking the two story lines converge in volume 3. Nope. In volume 4, yes, but in one of the most trivial ways possible. One could skip this book and go right to 4 and not be lost, though it might be a tiny bit jarring when the characters from book 3 appear.
I'm hoping this is not another series where the author keeps adding characters and settings in order to set up for a lifetime of writing books in the universe. This installment certainly has me suspecting that.

So woke I choked on it
If you enjoy every woke talking point being clumsily and unceremoniously dumped into a science fiction story then this book is for you! If you’re like the rest of the universe I suggest avoiding this book at all costs. If I wanted a lecture on male patriarchy I would choke down some Wolf. I wouldn’t however expect to hear it shoehorned into a conversation between a kidnapped human woman and her fellow prisoner/jailer. I’m sure the average persons brain dwells on beauty standards 5 minutes after coming out of solitary confinement on an alien ship. . .

I love Star Trek and Star Wars, but this series will make a much better movie.
