Knew what I was in for with Mhairi McFarlane...

If you're expecting a light-hearted rom com, this is not it. McFarlane writes novels that dwell in the heartbreak of grief, loss, betrayal, self doubt. Her novels are thoughtful, intelligent, and honest. She celebrates feminism, respect, friendships, chosen families, and the healing power of forgiveness and understanding.

This novel was also a joy to read in its real depiction of diverse characters, especially noting constant microaggressions toward the main character. Acknowledging her experiences made her life full and real.

I think that's part of why I keep coming back to this author. Part of the story will blow my heart up, scatter it to pieces. But as she wraps it up, she sews the pieces together and inflates them into a hot air balloon. :-P I enjoy the ride and forgive her for any tears.

P.S. Her novels always have amazing narrators and Sara Novak is no exception. Great listen!

Charming & laugh out loud fun

Charming & laugh out loud fun. This is a great escape in dark times. Love that there’s a woman of color as the heroine.

Great character development, excellent narration, and funny!

I chose this book because I had listening to another by the same author and really enjoyed it. When I first read the description of this book, I was worried about the “fake boyfriend” plot line being a tired one, as it appears in so many books nowadays. But the author’s storytelling is so compelling that it sucks you right into the plot very quickly. Her character development is detailed and in depth, and the narrator does an incredible job differentiating between all of the characters that appear in the book, using lively accents and changing up her pattern of speaking accordingly. This book is also hilarious — there were many lines that had me laughing out loud while listening, and that’s thanks to the witty writing and the excellent narration.

Enjoyable British Romance

I have been looking for stories with women of color as the lead. This one did not disappoint. It wasn't overly predictable. It wasn't sexually graphic and it didn't use curse word excessively. I'm glad I got it.

LOVEEEEED IT Decently gonna be one of those i revisit after a while, and then again and again jaja i totally fell in love with the characters ;') I'm still grieving ending it tho :(

Should have had an Epilogue

I liked the story. While Dan kind of got his come- upins, It could have been better for all the ladies who was pissed about how he did what he did. Megan could have got some too, more of a realization of what her man stealing behind got for all of her shirts work,she but too late now. I wish the story had an Epilogue where the little fella Hazel mentioned came to fruition. Out of the entire story that is the one thing I would change. The narration is really good. It seems to me the stories around British pple tend to be very whitty and I love the word play.

Enchantingly delightful story

Predictable yet enchantingly delightful story that tackles real, raw emotions and what matters in life most. Combined with top notch narration, this audiobook left me laughing out loud, commiserating with the lead character, and examining my own female friendships and their integral importance in my life. Highly recommend the book!

Enjoyable Story

At first, the beginning few chapters did not really catch my interest. However, I decided to go ahead and invest some.more time, the story picked up and Lori's love journey had me hooked.

I already had in my mind the fake romance would have a turn. Albeit, not in the manner evolved, I am happy with the final turnout. Lori discovery more than anything, she mayters and go for it....who knows how things will turn out.

Engaging story

Interesting and engaging story with a few unpredictable twists. I especially enjoyed the narration and the various accents. Lovely overall!
