Acerca de esta escucha
“Neil Irwin has written a wonderful, fascinating narrative of our fast-changing world, filled with erudite analysis and practical advice... This is a map to the modern economy - and a lodestar for navigating your career.” (Charles Duhigg, best-selling author of The Power of Habit and Smarter Faster Better)
From New York Times best-selling author and senior economic correspondent at The New York Times, how to survive - and thrive - in this increasingly challenging economy.
Every ambitious professional is trying to navigate a perilous global economy to do work that is lucrative and satisfying, but some find success while others struggle to get by. In an era of remarkable economic change, how should you navigate your career to increase your chances of landing not only on your feet but ahead of those around you?
In How to Win in a Winner-Take-All World, Neil Irwin, senior economic correspondent at the New York Times, delivers the essential guide to being successful in today’s economy when the very notion of the “job” is shifting and the corporate landscape has become dominated by global firms. He shows that the route to success lies in cultivating the ability to bring multiple specialties together - to become a “glue person” who can ensure people with radically different technical skills work together effectively - and how a winding career path makes you better prepared for today's fast-changing world. Through original data, close analysis, and case studies, Irwin deftly explains the 21st-century economic landscape and its implications for ambitious people seeking a lifetime of professional success.
Using insights from global giants like Microsoft, Walmart, and Goldman Sachs, and from smaller lesser known organizations like those that make cutting-edge digital effects in Planet of the Apes movies or Jim Beam bourbon, How to Win in a Winner-Take-All World illuminates what it really takes to be on top in this world of technological complexity and global competition.
Praise for How to Win in a Winner-Take-All World:
“How to Win in a Winner-Take-All World demonstrates why Neil Irwin is one of America’s most highly regarded economic journalists... If you want to navigate the rocky terrain of modern work, this book is your map and Irwin is your guide.” (Daniel H. Pink, best-selling author of When, To Sell Is Human, and Drive)

Much of what we hear about who gets to the top, and how, is wrong. Those who become chief executives set their sights on the C-suite at an early age. In fact, over 70 percent of the CEOs didn't have designs on the corner office until later in their careers. You must graduate from an elite college. In fact, only seven percent of CEOs in the dataset are Ivy League graduates - and eight percent didn't graduate from college at all. To become a CEO you need a flawless résumé. The reality: 45 percent of CEO candidates had at least one major career blowup.

We have been spoon-fed the notion that creativity is the province of genius - of those favored, brilliant few whose moments of insight arrive in unpredictable flashes of divine inspiration. And if we are not geniuses, we might as well pack it in and give up. Either we have that gift, or we don’t. But Allen Gannett shows that simply isn’t true. Recent research has shown that there is a predictable science behind achieving commercial success in any creative endeavor, from writing a popular novel to starting up a successful company to creating an effective marketing campaign.

Fascinating
A fascinating and highly accessible look at the new workplace and what it takes to succeed. Irwin highlights ideas about the nature of workplace competency, and introduces a broader, more expansive view of what skills and mindsets are likely to change the names on the C-Suite offices- and redefine the C-Suite itself. I’m an educator, not a business careerist, yet I found his work engaging and compelling. Well done!
