"You'll not only break the ice, you'll melt it away with your new skills." -Larry King

"The lost art of verbal communication may be revitalized by Leil Lowndes." -Harvey McKay, author of How to Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive

What is that magic quality that makes some people instantly loved and respected? Everyone wants to be their friend (or, if single, their lover). In business, they rise swiftly to the top of the corporate ladder. What is their “Midas touch?”

What it boils down to is a more skillful way of dealing with people.

The author has spent her career teaching people how to communicate for success. In her book How to Talk to Anyone, Lowndes offers 92 easy and effective sure-fire success techniques - she takes the listener from first meeting all the way up to sophisticated techniques used by the big winners in life. In this information-packed audiobook you’ll find:

  • 9 ways to make a dynamite first impression
  • 14 ways to master small talk, “big talk,” and body language
  • 14 ways to walk and talk like a VIP or celebrity
  • 6 ways to sound like an insider in any crowd
  • 7 ways to establish deep subliminal rapport with anyone
  • 9 ways to feed someone’s ego (and know when NOT to!)
  • 11 ways to make your phone a powerful communications tool
  • 15 ways to work a party like a politician works a room
  • 7 ways to talk with tigers and not get eaten alive

In her trademark entertaining and straight-shooting style, Leil gives the techniques catchy names so you’ll remember them when you really need them, including: “Rubberneck the Room,” “Be a Copyclass,” “Come Hither Hands,” “Bare Their Hot Button,” “The Great Scorecard in the Sky,” and “Play the Tombstone Game,” for big success in your social life, romance, and business.

How to Talk to Anyone, which is an update of her popular book, Talking the Winner's Way (see the 5-star reviews of the latter) is based on solid research about techniques that work!

By the way, don't confuse How to Talk to Anyone with one of Leil's previous books, How to Talk to Anybody About Anything. This one is completely different!

Some of this is very helpful and might change the way you interact with people. But it needs cutting down it seems very longwinded and repetitive in parts. It is also a little dated.

It could do with some editing

This book will be completely relatable to both men and women. It is not by a woman for women.

The narration is clear, pleasant and has a good pace.

I liked the "big cats/ little cats" theme. The author explains not only how each behaves, but explains why one approach is better and how to deploy the big cat strategy.

Each topic concluded with the perfect blend of concept, imagery, examples and action items.

I couldn't help but think, "Oh, that's why!", "Whoops!" or "Now I know how to..." as I listened.

Tips are gender neutral enough for this guy

This book was overall very helpful, but some of it seemed dated, and her language also seemed old. The author would benefit from having a updated edition that addressed new technology advances in communication (social media and cellphones) and didn't use phrases that haven't been uttered in 30 yrs.

Helpful but very outdated

Although this is a highly rated book, I noticed upon reading the reviews that a lot of recent ones are negative. To be honest, it almost put me off from trying. I'm am glad that it didn't, though.

Here's the thing, the author is from a different generation, this is not a handbook for millennial style communication, social media aspiration, or other forms of recent communication. This is written by an older author, and it is a wonderful compilation of stories, and solid, easy to to understand rules, that are timeless, for the most part. Is she a bit outdated sometimes? Absolutely. But, if you do not consider yourself a top communicator, you are doing yourself a disservice to not read this book, just because she sometimes uses strange phrases or something. Even if you only learn something from 30 of the 92 ways to talk to people, it is well worth it to pick this gem up.

And why? Because what you will learn are things that people either tend to know instinctively... or they don't. Some of these rules will seem obvious to you, and I guarantee you, the ones that don't, you will immediately be scratching your head saying "Did everybody else read this when they were kids and I just somehow missed this day in social class?".

Naysayers gonna naysay

I appreciate that this book goes over solid, specific, useful techniques. Usually the content of self-improvement books can be boiled down to fit on a post-it note. That is not the case here.

The communication skills range from parties, sales and general interpersonal communication.

Tips to help people improve in these areas are very much needed and valuable. I'm making a note to re-listen to this in the future so I can remind myself on some of the useful techniques - although I don't agree that all the techniques are useful or correct.

The author can be VERY funny at times.

I appreciate the personal anecdotes, and how the author does not shy away from telling stories of mistakes she has made.

Now for the bad.

I'm not certain that the author is always aligned with science.

The book, despite talking about bringing interpersonal skills into the 21st century, is woefully out of date. The author speaks of fax machines, telegrams, Woody Allen, betamax. Much of it is out of touch with the modern world.

The language can also be a touch insensitive at times. The author maintains that any woman complaining about "hitting the glass ceiling" simply lacks communication skills. The author repeatedly talks of "big boys" and "little losers".

But still, there are some useful tips. I wish someone would make a book like this, but for the modern era.

Woefully out of date, but some useful tips

I loved this book. It gives multiple examples of social interactions that most of us will see daily or often enough to want to keep Joyce’s advise in mind. From interacting with some you’re romantically interested in, leading a meeting with high ranking officials present, to simple daily interactions with friends/ family, these 92 practices have been extremely useful to me (a single 26 year old male).

It’s a definite re-read for me, it’s hard to remember all of them and it will serve as a nice refresher when I find myself having poor interactions or having a long car ride.

Recommend to anyone of any age.
