A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“The fights against hunger, homelessness, poverty, health disparities, poor schools, homophobia, transphobia, and domestic violence are feminist fights. Kendall offers a feminism rooted in the livelihood of everyday women.”—Ibram X. Kendi, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist, in The Atlantic

“One of the most important books of the current moment.”—Time

“A rousing call to action... It should be required reading for everyone.”—Gabrielle Union, author of We’re Going to Need More Wine

A potent and electrifying critique of today's feminist movement announcing a fresh new voice in Black feminism.

Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. That feminists refuse to prioritize these issues has only exacerbated the age-old problem of both internecine discord and women who rebuff at carrying the title. Moreover, prominent White feminists broadly suffer from their own myopia with regard to how things like race, class, sexual orientation, and ability intersect with gender. How can we stand in solidarity as a movement, Kendall asks, when there is the distinct likelihood that some women are oppressing others?

In her searing collection of essays, Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women. Drawing on her own experiences with hunger, violence, and hypersexualization, along with incisive commentary on politics, pop culture, the stigma of mental health, and more, Hood Feminism delivers an irrefutable indictment of a movement in flux. An unforgettable debut, Kendall has crafted a ferocious clarion call to all would-be feminists to live out the true mandate of the movement in thought and in deed.

Reseñas de la Crítica

Named a Best Book of 2020 by Bustle, BBC, and Time

A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2020

“In prose that is clean, crisp, and cutting, Kendall reveals how feminism has both failed to take into account populations too often excluded from the banner of feminism and failed to consider the breadth of issues affecting the daily lives of millions of women. . . . Throughout, Kendall thoughtfully and deliberately takes mainstream feminism to task . . . [but] if Hood Feminism is a searing indictment of mainstream feminism, it is also an invitation. For every case in which Kendall highlights problematic practices, she offers guidance for how we can all do better.”—NPR

“With poise and clarity, Kendall lays out the case for why feminists need to fight not just for career advancement but also for basic needs and issues that often plague women of color, including food security, educational access, a living wage and safety from gun violence. In expertly tying the racial justice and feminist movements together, Kendall’s is one of the most important books of the current moment.”—Time, “100 Must-Read Books of 2020”

Hood Feminism paints a brutally candid and unobstructed portrait of mainstream white feminism: a narrow movement that disregards the needs of the overwhelming majority of women. In the storied tradition of Black feminism stretching back to Maria Stewart, Kendall persuasively contends that women’s basic needs are feminist issues. The fights against hunger, homelessness, poverty, health disparities, poor schools, homophobia, transphobia, and domestic violence are feminist fights. Kendall offers a feminism rooted in the livelihood of everyday women.”—Ibram X. Kendi, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist, in The Atlantic

This book has been life changing! As a black woman it really spoke to me and how intersectional feminism is a movement for me and about me! It challenged me to make better choices and support other women along this journey!

If you identify as a feminist this book is 100% necessary reading for you.

As someone who is white and has been very privileged this clues me into how much we as white feminists have forgotten the bipoc community.

Read this book.

If you’re White, why haven’t you read this yet? Kendall is eloquent, powerful, and poignant in her assessment of White feminism.

As a cis white femme settler on coast Salish land Who always identified as a feminist I greatly appreciated Mikki Kendall’s review of the second and possibly third wave white feminist movement. I recognized at least a few outdated or ignorant beliefs I held and have changed as a result. I couldn’t ask for more from this book, she really did an excellent job!

I’ve never felt so seen before. I loved the book and the topics she touched on as they relate to so much of my own life. So many of them could be expanded in into their own book and explored in depth. Great read. My only complaint would be that the author read it with a “speech off of a paper” tone opposed to being a bit more conversational. Minor critique for an otherwise amazing book.

I like that the author was the one who read it, I can envision parts of her childhood by the way she read it. The pain that she felt from some situations she had gone through and the anger she feels from the unfairness of minorities. It was a great book!

The words of honesty are so powerful in this. I had to buy the book to highlight many pages. If you are working in an organization that is doing work rooted in equity this book for your boar and staff should be required reading. The author does a great job about including other BIPOC women issues. I would love to see her collaborate with a Latinx Feminist author and in Spanish. Book club recommended.

We don’t need allies we need accomplices

I like to think that I am one of those white women who can relate the most to being black because I have not been very privileged. Of course privilege is a relative concept. I had the privilege of attending the University of Michigan for example, but I feel like I earned that because I got accepted.

But there I go again making it all about me.

And I totally get that this is the problem with feminism. I really thought that feminists cared about all women, not just white women. I thought that feminism understood that poverty affects too many women of color, therefore economic equity is a feminist issue. But this author shows that this is not actually the case.

This author made it out of the hood. A person might argue, “Well if she can do it, then everyone can do it.” This author has published this book and it has become famous. Again, if she can do it, then everyone can do it. I have tried and I have not reached the level of success that she has and I am white. There is a certain constellation of conditions that must somehow align for success in life. To somehow believe that this set of conditions can be in existence for absolutely anyone is absurd. Add in race and it becomes that much harder

sShe almost made me ashamed to call myself a feminist.

The author did a great job of providing an overview of what inclusive feminism is and the harm mainstream white feminism has done to marginalised communities. Some parts I did not agree with like on voting and electoral politics but overall a great audiobook.
