Publisher's Summary

Two years after the Pulse shut down the nation’s power grid, Darrick, his wife Tonya, and their autistic son Andy, show up on the doorstep of Darrick’s childhood home. Darrick must make peace with his older brother Jimmie and ailing father James, all the while reacquainting himself with the life of a homesteader.

Meanwhile, a looming omen hovers over everything he holds dear. A huge murder of crows circles a large, well-equipped, and organized group of aggressive survivors that are about to discover the homestead and threaten everyone’s way of life. When a bad decision leads to the loss of a family member, everything changes, and Darrick must reanalyze and adapt himself to the situation. Mistrust and paranoia take hold as Darrick struggles with the blurred lines between friend and foe.

Top tier in genre

Great story. Gritty, realistic, great characters (too bad some of the good guys bit the dust). I will be listening to the rest of this series. I highly recommend this book. Now for the obligatory: "I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

A must read!

This was my first but definitely not my last L. Douglas Hogan book. His characters and storylines captured my attention right away. I look forward to reading his next book.

Loved it can’t wait for book 2

First book by Mr. Hogan that I have had the pleasure of listening to. Waiting for book 2 in the series, so I’ve started another of his series the Tyrant, and have not been disappointed.

Can’t wait to see what he brings to life next.

A great start to the series

The narration is clear and smooth, the tone and Pace match the feel of the book. The character voices are clear consistent and recognisable.

I've read a lot of apocalyptic and post apocalyptic in the last year and this is one of the best. It starts about 2 years after the apocalyptic event so it doesn't deal with the immediate aftermath except in flashbacks. Instead it deals with survivors have had to do many things they would never have previously considered in order to survive.

It came across as realistic, even probable. I enjoyed the style of writing, it was very easy to read and also emotionally compelling.

The characters are well written and come alive on the page. The motivations are ones you can relate to, even when you don't agree with them. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Just Average

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is for the audio copy of Homestead: A Post-Apocalyptic Tale of Human Survival, by L. Douglas Hogan and narrated by Kevin Pierce. This book was just average for me. The characters were believable and their development was consistent. I just didn’t like their decision making process and there was quite a bit of “drama” between them. The story line is as expected for this genre. Overall it was just okay. I might get the sequel to see where it goes. But it wasn’t one of those stories where I couldn’t put it down and I am not dying to know what happens next. Kevin Pierce did an excellent narration of the story of course.

Great example of post-apocalypse fiction done well

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I've listened to many books by Kevin Pierce by this point and he is definitely one of my favorites. I've also gotten to listen to a few others by L. Douglas Hogan. I Have to say, this is by far my favorite of his. At just 5.5 hours, it's not super long, but I was immediately sucked in and kept glued to my headphones for the entire book. I pretty much binge-listened to this book in a day. Definitely looking forward to book 2.

Amazing SHTF story!

If you enjoy SHTF novels, pick this one up. This one isn't all about "I prepped endlessly so I'm going to rule this world". It's a true family survival and it shows the real pain that surviving after society collapses could cause. I really enjoyed this book and it won't be the last by this author/narrator!

The end is just the beginning.

A cautionary tale of a strange new world fought with hidden danger in the aftermath of an apocalypse. Kevin Pierce does a magnificent job of bringing these characters to life.

Another great addition to the genre!

I love almost every book in this genre, so glad Hogan keeps ‘em coming.
Really makes you think about how you would get along in some trying times and how you would respond to some intense confrontations.
Really liked this book.

The narrator is the best in this genre. Sometimes I search for his name when I am looking for something to listen to. Sooo Good!

Post Apocalyptic

This is violent so for those who do not like this sort of thing then it is not for you. This is about how people act in certain situation and it does not seem really far fetched. This is shown in this book in how some people treat each other hence the violence. My only negative is that it goes back and forwords in time. I did find it confusing at times and also for me it ruined the suspense. However, it is still a good book.
