Acerca de esta escucha
Peru is a land of majesty and wonder where myth, legend, and history all come together. And this audiobook gives you a front-row seat!
The land of Peru is one that, for many, seems far away and distant. Even for those living relatively nearby geographically, Peru can seem just out of reach. After all, Peru is situated high in the Andes on the western coast of South America. Those who dare to live at this high of an elevation have learned to live on their own terms.
The Inca leader Manco II, for example, displayed his tenacity by heading a rebel kingdom in the depths of the Amazon even after much of the Inca Empire of his ancestors had been overrun by the Spanish conquistadors.
Manco’s struggle was later picked up by Túpac Amaru II, who waged war against the Spanish occupation. Túpac Amaru II would be captured and executed for daring to revolt against the Spanish Crown, but his legend would live on in the hearts and minds of Peruvians everywhere.
Fast forward to Peru’s independence from Spain, and one finds the heroic Simón Bolívar. He was pivotal in the independence of Peru, as well as a whole slew of Latin American countries, which he was put in charge of at various times during his dynamic career.
Great heroes like Simón Bolívar certainly stand out, but so do other intriguing and captivating characters from Peru’s past. From the great Inca ruler Atahualpa to Francisco Pizarro to modern-day Peruvian presidents like Alberto Fujimori and Dina Boluarte, Peru has quite a story to tell!
In this audiobook, you will learn about the following:
- The origins of Peruvian civilization
- The rise and fall of the Inca Empire
- The explorations of conquistadors like Francisco Pizarro
- Revolutionaries like Túpac Amaru II and resistance to Spanish rule
- Peru’s struggle for independence

Though the men of Versailles (and they were overwhelmingly men) had arrived in Paris to put an end to World War I, by the time the conference ended, the main goal of the diplomats and national leaders had turned into ending wars for all time. Obviously, that did not work, and as a matter of fact, the end result of the Paris Peace Conference - the Treaty of Versailles - would likely cause more wars than any of its authors could have possibly dreamed of, including World War II.

Germany is a relatively young nation-state. United in 1871, it's even younger than the United States. However, the territories inhabited by the Germanic people have a rich history that reaches far back in prehistory and antiquity. Located in the heart of Europe, Germany witnessed centuries of conflicts, immigration, and negotiations. Consequently, its shape, size, and ethnicity changed throughout history. The territories which constitute Germany today were often war zones, and at times they would join forces against a common enemy or break apart due to internal conflicts.

Since its beginnings, Poland has been a moving target, geographically as well as demographically, and the very definition of who is a Pole has been in flux. In the late medieval and early modern periods, the country grew to be the largest in continental Europe, only to be later wiped off the map for more than a century. Yet even under these constraints, Poles persisted in their desire to wrest from their oppressors a modicum of national dignity and, ultimately, managed to achieve much more than that.

A country both admired and feared, Germany has been the epicenter of world events time and again: the Reformation, both World Wars, the fall of the Berlin Wall. It did not emerge as a modern nation until 1871 - yet today, Germany is the world's fourth-largest economy and a standard-bearer of liberal democracy.

I appreciate hearing the history. I could have done without the play-by-play on each battle, and given more time to the pre-Inca history and more information about Peru less information about the transfer of power from year to year. Was Peru the entire landmass and broken down into Bolivia, Argentina and Chile? That’s what I concluded from this rendering of history? Were there originally no geographic lines of countries until later? And did Europe install those geographic lines during colonization; similar to the division of the? It was a short book, that led me to more questions that I will continue to investigate.
The narration was all right, some of the high notes and low notes at the end of each word could be reduced.

Engaging high level history. Poor narration. Overall worth a listen.
I wanted a high level history book that traces the history of Peru, and this book did a good job providing that. It covers Peruvian history from the pre-written history period up through today. It spent perhaps a disproportionate time describing the conflict between the Spanish empire and the Incan empire, but that part was also the most interesting and engagingly told. The narrator was difficult to listen to. Every sentence had the same odd lilting intonation, and he mispronounced some English words here and there. I was able to eventually get used to the narrator and still enjoy the book overall.
