Resumen del Editor

If you want to discover the captivating history of Germania, then pay attention....

Germany is a relatively young nation-state. United in 1871, it's even younger than the United States. However, the territories inhabited by the Germanic people have a rich history that reaches far back in prehistory and antiquity. Located in the heart of Europe, Germany witnessed centuries of conflicts, immigration, and negotiations. Consequently, its shape, size, and ethnicity changed throughout history. The territories which constitute Germany today were often war zones, and at times they would join forces against a common enemy or break apart due to internal conflicts. Because of these conflicts, Germany’s boundaries, as well as what it means to be German, fluctuated throughout history and, in some way, are still evolving. The region's long and troubled history influences its present, its politics, and its nationality.

In Germania: A Captivating Guide to the History of a Region in Europe Where Germanic Tribes Dominated and How It Transformed into Germany, you will discover topics such as

How Germany became the Germany we know today

Pull up a chair and watch the land in which Germany now stands transform into the country we know today.

An excellent overview and springboard

This is not an English translation of the Roman account of German barbarians by the same name. While I was looking for the Roman account, this book does summarize and include information from that history and much much more. It’s a very good overview and presents many topics for the reader to pursue for more in-depth reading and research. I did find the narrator’s pronunciation of a few words a little jarring, one that comes to mind that was used a few times being “debacle”.

another that spans the ages

another fascinating insight into another region that has allowed culture to spark, n then flourish

I usually prefer this narrator, but there were a couple of times when intonation didn't keep me as "captivated" as usual.

overall, another recommendation, n will probably reread at a later time

So much significant information - so well done!

Not home of human artifacts 50 million years ago - big error in introduction of early history. But after this mistake he used "thousands correctly". Excellent well-focused account of Germania past and leading up to present. I'm starting it again into insure I didn't miss too much. Very fast paced and succinct but easy to listen to.

good overview

I found the narration a bit hard to focus on in sections but it's a good primer on German history. I am curious to learn more about the Germanic tribes.

Another great "Captivating History" presentation!

Having read the e-book version of "Germania", I looked forward to listening to the audiobook version. I was very satisfied with the narration and the additional understanding that I received as a result of listening to the audio version. Once again, a concise and very interesting history of the German people from their beginnings to the present.

Germania from prehistory to present made memorable

I've always been interested in Germany and the German language and knew major periods (Roman times, the world wars, etc.) but less so with prehistory and the many tribes and other peoples of the area. In this audio book, the entire span from earliest known tribes to the very present, the through line of the Germanic tribes to modern German was detangled and made memorable in a very informative way.

The organization and length of each chapter worked well and allowed adequate detail level for each of the time periods covered. This made the content easily digestible and was well balanced, offering interesting anecdotes while providing overall context in a well-structured narrative arc.

The listed running length of the book is over six hours but don't let that dissuade you. The performance is well done and even at the more rapid pace I use (1.7x), Jason Zenobia's voice is clear and engaging. My only (minor) quibble is some less than exact pronunciation of some German names and words. Even so, I very much enjoyed listening to this wonderful history.

Overall, I really enjoyed this audio book and highly recommend it.
