Do you want to discover more about the country that inspired the story of Dracula? Then, dive into the captivating history of Romania!

In this audiobook, you will discover how Romania developed from a distant Roman province on the fringes of the Roman Empire to a modern state in eastern Europe, one ready to adopt Western values.

Romania lies on Europe’s eastern border, and as such, it is often neglected in history. Although it is a culturally very rich country, the world displayed little interest in its promotion. By listening to this captivating history of Romania, you will learn about the turbulent past of the region, the many wars it fought, and the people who led them. You will also learn the truth behind the character of Vlad the Impaler and decide for yourself if he was a ruthless, bloodthirsty ruler or a politician, tactician, and national hero.

Here is a tiny fraction of what you will discover in this audiobook:

  • Who the Dacians were and if they really are the ancestors of the Romanian people
  • How Romania connected the West and East
  • How the first independent Romanian kingdoms formed and took the role of guarding Europe against Ottoman invasions
  • Vlad Tepes, Stephen the Great, and Michael the Brave, three medieval heroes who are still celebrated today
  • The Phanariots, the Greek rulers of Moldavia and Wallachia
  • The unification of the country and its international recognition
  • The position of minorities and how gypsies and women were treated in Romania’s past
  • What role Romania played during the two World Wars
  • How communism almost destroyed the nation
  • Communism Rising
  • The Ceausescu Regime
  • And much, much more!

Got this on a whim. Saw it and figured I don’t know much about Romanian history other than a few things. It was a well done book and as captivating as a factual history and pretty straight to the point book could be. I enjoyed it and learned a lot of things I wouldn’t have otherwise. I listened to it all in one day at work.

Admittedly I probably got it because of Vlad the Impaler being part of it and they covered him fairly well. Obviously he was a small part of Romanian history and was just a chapter in the book but learned a few details I wasn’t aware of before. I tend to like historical books that are, I guess, somewhat fictionalized and told through a dialogued story but this was a straight forward telling of historical events somewhat like a history class but one I didn’t fall asleep in. LOL

If you want to know about the history of Romania from before Ancient Rome to modern times it is worth the read or listen.

Pretty interesting and I recommend.

overall it was good. I have not fact checked, nor will I, so I can not comment on accuracy. the narrator does use some words a lot, such as "however", and not always correctly.

Short, but eye opening

This is a great presentation of the long and storied history from early human habitation at the crossroads of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe to the modern nation of Romania. The story makes it easy to follow the birth and growth of major principalities of Wallachia, Transylvania, and Moldavia and how the people and culture of the area survived the pressures of larger empires and kingdoms. From the Roman conquest of the Dacians, to the central role that the orthodox church played in preserving the culture and Romanian language, maneuvering in the Kingdom of Hungarian and then the Ottoman Empire, to the survival of Nazi German alliance, then Soviet satellite state, dictatorship, and now a modern democracy.

The history of Romania is a richly complex tapestry of many different heroes, villains, princes, alliances, etc. The book does not gloss over the disturbing parts of the history like antisemitism, treatment of the Roma people, and the terrors of the Ceaușescu dictatorship.

All in all, it is a really great telling of a long and complex history. I found the middle ages section the most fascinating with interactions with the Bulgars, Magyars, and the Ottomans.

An engaging journey of a nation's history
