Publisher's summary

A long-buried secret that was never meant to be uncovered could suddenly put a target on both Detective Mark Friessen and Billy Jo McCabe.

Twenty-five years ago, Billy Jo was born to a meth addict and spent her first few months being weaned off the drug. Labeled a difficult baby, she was bounced from foster home to foster home. Later, she was called trouble, a runner, and was accused of starting fires and stealing. She pulled a knife on one foster brother and threatened to bash in the head of another, then spent time in jail by the age of 15. That was before she pulled a gun at a gas station and was adopted by Chase McCabe. Her file was then sealed.

However, Billy Jo feels growing resentment for the woman responsible for her first 15 years of hell, the one who tossed her away as if she were garbage. That has her seeking out leads as to where her real mother is, her last known whereabouts based on the sealed file she isn’t technically supposed to access. But following the rules is not something Billy Jo is known for, especially not when she’s playing amateur detective, asking about a woman who evidently doesn’t want to be found.

Before long, Detective Mark Friessen shows up on her doorstep after someone files a complaint against her, warning her about harassing the locals. But then, Billy Jo finds herself terrorized by someone determined to stop her from uncovering the truth.

Trusting anyone in her search could come at a cost, as Billy Jo soon learns that when her mother disappeared, she took with her a secret that someone doesn’t want unearthed. Ultimately, her quest for answers puts a target on her that could see her killed, and that leaves Billy Jo once again forced to trust Mark, a man she will likely always be at odds with.

A secret is revealed. Absolutely loved this book!

Mark and Billy Jo are two of my favorite characters, but Billy Jo is both stubborn and determined to uncover a secret about her past, even after Mark warns her, sometimes a secret is best left where it is. The characters were brought to life by the narrator Leo Jones in this fantastic series.

The premise is lame

Throughout this book I felt I was missing something. It seemed there was some history that was never revealed. Even the book synopsis mentions details that aren't described in the story -- a story that is very much anticlimactic. The big secret isn't all that earthshattering. The entire premise of the story is lame. And the narration by Leo Jones does nothing to enhance the story. His performance is competent at best. I was left feeling rather unsatisfied in the end.

Great Read

Hiding in Plain Sight (Billy Jo McCabe Mystery Book 2) was a great read by Lorhainne Eckhart. BillyJo was born to a meth addict and spent the first few months weaning off the drug. She was labeled a difficult baby and bounced from foster home to foster home. She was adopted by Chase McCabe after racking up a long rap sheet, but after her adoption her file was sealed. She has always felt some resentment for the woman that gave birth to her and was the reason for her first fifteen years of hell. She is looking for her birth mother and will stop at nothing to find her. Mark ends up on her doorstep after a complaint against her about harassing the locals. Unfortunately BillyJo finds herself terrorized by someone but she doesn’t know who. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.

I needed more backstory.

Strangely, I just realized this book was listed under my "Reading" books. I finished this one sometime last month and remembering writing up a review for it, but I'm not sure what happened to it.

I remember the book just being okay. I also felt there should have been some [more] backstory for those readers who hadn't read the first book in this series. For example, the relationship between Billy Jo and the police officer/detective (I forgot his name). She didn't like him for some unknown reason that happened in book 1, but it's never revealed in this book what that reason was. I wish I could remember what I had typed up but I have a horrible memory.

The narrator did an okay job as well.

I received a free audiobook code in exchange for an honest review.

I Want More

This was a really interesting sequel. It seemed to almost follow along past the first one. Like you're just continuing about the person's life after the first story was over with. It's really interesting to me. I also love the fact that this was more personal to Billie Jo. It kind of helps you get to know her a little better. It helps you connect better with her and understand her and her personality a little better. I also like that we get to know Mike a little better in this book as well.

suspenseful

This story is emotional with suspense. All Billie Jo wanted was to find out answers. Who knew what a can of worms she opened. She is determined, stubborn and won't take no for an answer. Mark Friessen had one question for her. Are you happy with the information you have now, knowing you don't have the complete truth? Or knowing the complete story is something you really want to hear and may devastate you.
Leo Jones narration is very good.

A few answers

Billy Jo is on a mission. Adopted at age 15, she spent the first years of her life recovering from being born to a meth addict. Weaned from the drug, but troubled, she bounced from house to house until she finally found happiness. This built up a desire to find her birth mother and confront her. She thinks she may have found her on the island, but when approaching the woman, she is later told to stay away. And not only by her other, but the police. Again, Mark Friessen has stepped in her path to keep her in check. Will these two ever get along? And will she heed his advice? Some things are better off not known. Lorhainne Eckhart had my attention with this installment from start to finish. There were times I felt Billy Jo was a little self serving, but the story is so compelling and the outcome a surprise! I love the growing friendship or even love/hate relationship she has with Mark. These two are quite the pair, and I love their banter. This story does stand alone, but I would definitely grab the first book for a little additional background.

Leo Jones continues his narration of the series. I am enjoying his voice and his ability to bring out the suspense. This one has a lot of emotionally compelling elements as well, and he pulls it all together, letting us feel frustation and horror. He truly brings it all out and gives us a fantastic performance.

Loved it!

I’m starting to get used to Leo Jones narration. This story gets pretty serious as Billy Jo finds herself being watched but she doesn’t know by who. She has a few heated discussions with a local woman that then puts her in the sights of the local police. Detective Mark Friessen is ordered by his boss to get Billy Jo to stand down. We finally learn more about Mark’s past and why he ended up on the island. I really enjoyed listening to this book and I can’t wait to move on to the next one.

A great book from a wonderful author

In the second book of this series, we find Billy Jo searching for her birth mother, who abandoned her.
Her birth mother was addicted to meth and Billy Jo had to overcome that and so many other issues, including foster homes.
Adopted at fifteen by Chase and Rose McCabe, she is now working as a social worker. Because of their powerful influence, she will fight for the right to know why the first fifteen years of her life were determined by a woman who discarded her.
When she gets a lead on who her birth mother might be, the woman is not inclined to talk and a complaint against Billy Jo is filed with the police. Detective Mark Friessen, who is finally becoming used to Billy Jo, is tasked with getting her to leave things alone before they are both in further trouble with the police chief.
Will Billy Jo finally get her answers and if so, would it have been better not to know?
I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author and StoryOrigin.

I love this series!

This is the second installment in the Billy Jo McCabe Mystery Series. I like this Series! Billy Jo, a social worker, is smart, and strong. Her past is heartbreaking. Mark, a detective, is handsome, and protective. The storyline is emotional, filled with secrets, intrigue, danger, and twists and turns. The supporting characters are intriguing. Leo Jones did a great job with the narration. This is a great addition to the series.

Billy Jo & Mark!

Billy Jo’s negative experiences in the foster system until she was adopted when she was 15 have inspired her to become a social worker. She has recently come to town not only for her career but to get the answers that she so desperately needs from her birth mother and isn’t about to be deterred either by law enforcement or by the woman herself.

Mark is a detective who got to know Billy Jo when they were both investigating the case of a missing girl. Her search for her mother has drawn the ire of some powerful people and he is torn between doing what he believes is right and what he has been ordered to do especially when she finds herself in danger.

Billy Jo is about to find out that maybe some secrets should remain buried and that family is love not blood as she and Mark take us on an adventure filled with intrigue, surprises and compelling characters. The flow of the narration was seamless as the narrator brought out all the feelings from happiness to hurt. 🎧Audiobook Obsession

Mad for mysteries?

Hands up, I didn’t realise this was book 2 of a series before read/I listened to it-(and my thanks to the author for the free audio copy in return for an honest review). But even as the second book in a series it is that well-crafted that you can read it as a stand-alone. However, you might, like me, feel the traces of absence in the story line and want for more, which isn’t a bad thing as it just means it was good enough to persuade me to read the trilogy!

Unlike other reviewers I didn’t find the plot that full of twists and turns: I wasn’t looking for an all-out thriller just a very good mystery, which I got. And the hint of a blossoming romance is always welcome!

Billy Jo is an intriguing character, especially with the baggage of her past weighing on her and I truly hope she does find love somewhere – especially with Detective Mark Friessen! She certainly deserves something after the way her birth mother treats her!

Now as delightful as this story was, I have to mention the audio version – it was jarring! I couldn’t make up my mind (because I haven’t physically read the book) whether the author wrote in very short sentences, or the narrator decided to read the story in short bursts because he thought it would be more dramatic. Well, I even tried to adjust the reading speed and to no avail. For me the narration was jagged and grating but that’s just a personal thing.
