Publisher's Summary

You can take the detective out of the investigation, but you can't take the investigator out of the detective.

A notorious gang puts a bounty on Detective Cady Matthews's head after she takes down their leader, leaving her no choice but to hide until she can testify at trial. But her temporary home across the country on a remote North Carolina island isn't as peaceful as she initially thinks.

Living under the new identity of Cassidy Livingston, she struggles to keep her investigative skills tucked away, especially after a body washes ashore. When local police bungle the murder investigation, she can't resist stepping in.

But Cassidy is supposed to be keeping a low profile. One wrong move could lead to both her discovery and her demise. Can she bring justice to the island...or will the hidden currents surrounding her pull her under for good?

Recommend for YA Listeners

Pros:

-clean mystery, no sex, swearing, etc.
-I didn't know who the killer was at the end
-good beginning that pulled me in
-good narrator

Cons:

-I didn't give this 5 stars because the romance was too immature for me. I kept warring about whether to return it or not, because the mystery was good, but the constant teenager bickering with the person you like made me roll my eyes. I think if I read this while in high school, I'd have loved it. I don't mean that as an insult. I don't normally listen to YA books, but I think if you do, then it wouldn't bother you and you'd give it 5 stars. I think the series has promise.

Good story

I enjoyed this first book of the lantern beach mysteries. The author was clear and the story in-depth.

Okay

I kept listening because I wanted to know what happened. I don’t like having faith in God shoved in my face, it’s corny. I have a strong faith but I just don’t like having books tell me corny stuff about God. The writing was high school level and it was fun for a change from heavier material but the commentary about relationships and men and women were simplistic and well, corny and not very meaningful or realistic. The plot was tedious and drawn out in my opinion. Great for high school or even college age girls but not for people who have lived in the real world and dealt with reality. In my opinion. Unless you want a fantasy romance. Then it’s good. I struggled to finish it and will not read the next one. This author’s style is not for me. Looking for something with more substance.

Good storyline

The storyline was really good. The “bad guy” wasn’t revealed fully until the end. I do have to say that I am not a fan of Dara Rosenberg as the narrator. Her voice is too childlike and high pitched. There are times her voice makes the main character seem like a kid who is brainless. As for the characters, I will say that I think Christy Barritt doesn’t give her heroine enough guts. When she faces danger, it is almost like she just bumbles her way through on luck instead of the training you would expect from a big city detective. While she seems to react more than be proactive throughout the story, somehow she suddenly knows all the answers at the very end. I plan to listen to the next book, but as much as I want to for sure stick it out with the overall storyline, I’m not sure I can continue to listen to the narrator that long.

Great! 😁

I alreAdy read the book before and decided to try the audible version. Though the narrater sometimes made it hard to deceiver whether Cassidy was still speaking or not. But overall i enjoyed HEARING the story.

When a Detective…

… goes into Witness Protection expect complications!
Not least as, to avoid idle hands, Cassidy is given an ice cream van to run; has to learn her new name and avoid investigating. Hard when a body washes ashore just down from her temporary home. No, not investigating. At all,,.
A nice sense of place and the characters behind the scenes of a tourist town at the very end of the Outer Banks.
Almost a cosy misters but just a shade too gritty.
